Your job, your makeup and even your phone can all be culprits which leave your eyes looking tired and irritated. Staring at computer, television and handheld screens strain eyes, makeup can be abrasive and irritate eyes, and poor sleep can leave puffy exhausted eyes too. Whatever the cause, treatment and prevention are key to revitalizing and rejuvenating your sleepy peepers.

Screen Solution

In today’s tech-filled environment, computer, television and phone screens are causing more eye strain, leaving eyes red and sleepy. If you stare at a screen all day, try looking away for 30 seconds to a minute every 20 minutes. Take 5 minute breaks from the screen every couple of hours and keep the screen at eye level and about 2 feet away. This works for all screens you may be focusing on. Also dimming the brightness of screens can alleviate strain. Break the habit of constantly looking at your phone, and avoid reading long documents, watching videos and typing long documents on this tiny screen.

Proper Products

There are numerous products that can be leaving eyes tired and irritated. If you wear contacts constantly, try interchanging them with glasses when possible and use sensitive eye solution. Carry rewetting drops with you and apply every couple of hours to refresh eyes when wearing lenses. Makeup can also cause irritation. Try all natural, hypo-allergenic makeups and minimize the amount you use on eyes. If irritated eyes are accompanied with sniffling and a sore throat, an over-the-counter antihistamine can help, as you are most likely suffering from allergies.

Easy Remedies

Some at-home quick treatments can help to refresh sleepy looking eyes, and reduce redness and puffiness. Cucumber slices on the eyes for 5 to 10 minutes can cool, soothe and revitalize. Cooled potato slices can also help in this same way. Splash your eyes with cool water a few times throughout the day if you feel strain coming on. Eyebright eyewash is another natural treatment that will wash and brighten eyes.

Beauty Regime

Implementing certain beauty products into your regime can treat and prevent tired eyes. A daily eye cream to apply in the morning can prep eyes for the day and help fight off sagging and puffiness. A nighttime cream will help eyes repair as you sleep and allow you to wake up with refreshed eyes. Store creams in the refrigerator to keep them cool, and provide an extra boost of soothing sensation to exhausted eyes. Always wash off eye makeup prior to bedtime as well, and never sleep in contacts. Both of these instances can lead to irritation and tired eyes in the morning.

If you notice any redness or irritation following the use of any product around or in the eye, discontinue use immediately and rinse eyes with cool water. If your eyes continue to become irritated with prevention and treatment see your doctor, as there may be an underlying issue. If red eyes present with yellow discharge, pain or loss of eyesight seek medical help immediately.
