Wrap a hot dog with dough and bake it, and you'll have a pig in a blanket. Using smaller cocktail franks or cutting hot dogs into smaller pieces before wrapping them in dough gives you an appetizer-size portion of this kid-favorite. While this dish isn't particularly nutritious, you can make a healthier, lower-calorie version of this dish at home with a few simple ingredient changes.

Calorie Comparisons

A recipe for pigs in a blanket made with homemade dough has about 224 calories for a portion made with one hot dog. Using fat-free biscuit dough and reduced-fat hot dogs will lower the calorie count slightly to 200. Make your pigs in a blanket with reduced-fat crescent dough and fat-free hot dogs, and each serving will have 134 calories. Should you prefer a cheesy version, try wrapping reduced-fat hot dogs in reduced-fat cheddar and phyllo dough, for a pig in a blanket with 75 calories per hot dog. The phyllo dough coating will be thinner than the traditional pigs in a blanket coating, however.
