If you are familiar with the typical fettucine Alfredo ingredients, you're probably aware that it isn't a low-calorie food. The number of calories a plate of this creamy, cheesy dish can contain may surprise you, however. You'll need to watch your portion size if you want to fit this delicious dish into your diet without going over your daily calorie allotment.

Calorie Comparisons

A plateful of fettucine Alfredo at a restaurant may contain as many as 2,940 calories. Making this dish yourself and watching your portion size can help you keep the calories down to a reasonable number. A 1-cup serving of fettucine topped about 1/3 cup of an Alfredo sauce made with butter, Parmesan cheese and heavy cream has about 472 calories.

Healthier Options

If you replace the butter and heavy cream in the typical Alfredo sauce with a mix of chicken broth, reduced-fat sour cream and low-fat milk and add peas, a small amount of prosciutto and Parmesan, you can have a larger serving, including about 1 1/2 cups of pasta, for 619 calories. Another option is to use evaporated skim milk, flour, low-fat milk and Parmesan cheese to make the sauce. A serving of this fettucine Alfedo, including 1/4 cup of the sauce, 1 1/2 cups of fettucine, 1/4 pound of chicken and 1/2 cup of sliced zucchini, contains about 660 calories.
