Combinations of Biotin, Cysteine & Sulfur for the Hair

Instead of popping a supplement, eat a diet filled with nutrient-rich foods for better health.

While there does seem to be a correlation between certain nutrients and hair health, unless you're deficient in biotin, cysteine or sulfur, taking these in supplement form may not offer much benefit. In fact, a 2002 article published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology reports that getting excessive amounts of nutrients from supplements may increase risk of hair loss. Consult your doctor before adding any dietary supplements to your routine.

Why Biotin, Cysteine and Sulfur

A biotin deficiency is associated with hair loss, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. There's no evidence that adding a supplement is going to improve hair health and growth, however, unless it's correcting a nutrient deficiency.

Cysteine, an amino acid, and sulfur, a trace mineral, are two major components in hair. Even so, there's no mention of their benefits to hair health when taken in supplement form by the University of Maryland Medical Center or a scientific literature search.
