With acne affecting 85 percent of U.S. teenagers, according to American Academy of Dermatology, it is not surprising that many people develop scarring as a result. These scars may take different shapes, such as rolling depressions, ice-pick indentations as well as raised, fleshy keloids, notes Acne.org. For severe acne scarring, clinical treatments are the best option. If your acne simply caused red blemishes on the surface, topical home remedies such as vinegar may be effective.
Apple cider vinegar has been loosely linked as beneficial for a variety of ailments and conditions such as body odor, weight loss, acne and, according to GrannyMed, age spots. It can be taken both orally or applied topically to improve skin conditions. The Global Healing Center notes, in comparison to clear vinegar, raw apple cider vinegar has not been pasteurized or processed and therefore retains its beneficial enzyme properties and antioxidant agents.
There is no mention of apple cider vinegar as a treatment for acne scars on reputable medical websites. Indeed, even its links as an acne treatment are rather speculative. Detox For Life website notes that apple cider vinegar uses alpha hydroxy acids to remove oils and fatty deposits from the skin, as well as to remove dead skin cells to create a softer complexion.
Detox For Life recommends that you mix apple cider vinegar with water and then apply the solution topically to the acne via a cotton ball. Repeat this twice a day. Reportedly, this can help to dry out inflammation and reduce infection. Apple cider vinegar also can be mixed with honey and water and consumed orally. This acts to detoxify and can be beneficial to the skin, notes Detox For Life.
Consult your family doctor before attempting to treat any conditions with apple vinegar cider or any other natural remedy. Acne.org notes that any form of topical treatment for acne scars is largely ineffective. More research must be done on alternative remedies for acne conditions to confirm or disprove any statements of effectiveness, notes MayoClinic.com
GrannyMed lists aloe vera as a possible natural treatment for mild scarring. Acne.org lists clinical treatments as the only real effective solution to acne scarring. Chemical peels and laser treatments can be used for pitted scars while steroid injections and liquid nitrogen injections can be used to break down raised fleshy growth scars.
