Benefits of Amla Churna

Amla churna, also known as gooseberry, is an herb commonly used for a number of health benefits in the healing practice of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is an integrative healing art form that originated in India thousands of years ago. According to the Ayurvedic Institute, Ayurveda treats the mind, body and spirit by using herbs, nutrition, acupressure and a variety of other holistic methods. Skin Issues

According to Ayurvedic practitioner Rajeev Sharma in his book "Herbal Home Remedies," amla churna is useful in treating a number of skin issues. When mixed with chameli oil, it can be applied to the body to help alleviate itching. Amla can also be made into a tea and mixed with sugar to help cure dry skin. In traditional Ayurvedic remedies for dandruff and dry scalp, amla is mixed with lemon juice and made into a paste for application to the scalp to alleviate flaking and itching. When used in a bath, amla juice may help to reduce itching related to chickenpox.

Hair Remedies

Amla is used in a variety of Ayurvedic hair treatments. Proponents believe that washing your hair every day with a solution of amla soaked overnight with other Indian herbs can help to combat hair loss and add strength to your hair. Additionally, some Ayurvedic recipes using amla are said to simultaneously combat gray hair and hair loss. According to Ayurvedic doctor Babu S. Saresh in his book, "A Treatise on Home Remedies," you can combine amla juice with coconut oil to make a hair oil to treat gray hair and hair loss. You can also mix amla powder with the Ayurvedic herb Bhringaraj in a glass of milk and use this internally to combat graying and hair loss.


Amla is commonly used in Ayurvedic remedies for digestive problems. According to author Sharma, amla juice mixed with pomegranate juice, cloves and jaggery, a type of unrefined sugar, can help to alleviate indigestion and constipation. Eating raw amla every morning is said to be a tonic for the digestive system. It may also help to improve nutrient absorption and reduce symptoms of heartburn and stomach acid, especially after over-eating or eating heavy or fatty meals.
