Can Home Recipes Make Your Hair Grow Longer and Faster?

You may desire long locks, but you'll have to wait for them. Hair grows at a set rate of 0.35 millimeters per day, and you can't do anything at home or in the salon to speed it up. Age and genetics determine the finite length to which each of your hairs can grow. Home recipes can, however, maximize the health of your hair and ensure that you reach your maximum growth.

Eating Right

Meals rich in antioxidants and B vitamins improve the strength of your hair. You could check with your doctor to see if supplements are for you or aim to eat plenty of leafy greens, berries, garlic, tomatoes and green tea -- which are some of the foods richest in antioxidants. Sources of vitamin B, particularly biotin which discourages hair loss and breakage, include egg yolks, yeast, liver and whole grains. Zinc supports hair health and is found in nuts, meats, seeds and eggs.

Moisturize Away

Well-moisturized hair has strong hair shafts and is less vulnerable to breakage -- a scourge when you're aiming for length. Homemade moisturizing treatments include placing a beaten egg or just yolks if your hair is especially dry on your hair for 20 minutes at a time. Add mashed avocado to the mix for extra moisturizing power. An alternative treatment is a mask made from honey, which naturally attracts moisture, and eggs or avocado. Use either of these masks every other week.

Scalp Love

At-home scalp massages increase circulation at your hair follicles, which encourages growth. You can massage while you shampoo or when using a home recipe, L.A. stylist Philip B. told the magazine Marie Claire, by using your fingertips to massage the back of the neck and head and then moving toward the hairline. The increased circulation helps nutrients reach the hair follicles and just plain feels good.

Remove the Junk

Hair that's been chemically overprocessed or weighed down with an abundance of product may not reach its healthiest growing potential. Give it a treatment with yogurt or sour cream, which contains purifying lactic acid to remove the film and add life to the hair you have. Massage 1/2 cup of dairy product -- plain, please -- into your hair and permit it to rest for about 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo for a more lively and shiny head of hair. You can do this dairy dunk every couple of weeks.
