Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer contains the following humuctants: glycerin, butylene glycol, and sodium hyaluronate. The Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic Safety Database, also called EWG, gives all of these humuctants a low-hazard score.
Silicone Derived Moisturizer
Silicone derived moisturizers are silky feeling and form an invisible protective coating on the skin. Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer contains dimethicone, a silicone derived moisturizer. The EWG gives dimethicone a low-hazard to moderate-hazard score.
Plant Extract Moisturizers
Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer contains two plant extract moisturizers: Iris florentina root extract and Macadamia ternifolia seed oil. Both are given a safety score of zero by EWG, which is the best rating the group gives. Iris florentina root extract is a botanical ingredient derived from Orris root. It is rich in natural isoflavones and used to improve skin hydration and elasticity. Macadamia ternifolia seed oil is a natural moisturizer derived from the seeds of the macadamia ternifolia tree.
Practiv Green Tea Moisturizer contains sodium polyacrylat and hydrogenated polydecene, both of which are syntetic polymers that act as moisturizers. EWG gives sodium polyacrylate a moderate-hazard score and hydrogenated polydecene a low-hazard score.
The first ingredient in Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer is water. Water serves two purposes in a moisturizer. First, it acts as a thinner to make the moisturizer easier to spread on the skin. Second, it hydrates the skin. Proactive Green Tea Moisturizer also contains squalane, an oil-based moisturizer that can be derived from plant sources such as olives or animal sources such as shark liver. Proactiv does not state if the squalane in their green tea moisturizer is plant or animal based. EWG gives squalane a low-hazard score.
Special Purpose Ingredient: Epigallocatechin Gallate
Epigallocatechin gallate is a derivative of green tea. It is is an antioxidant that has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help treat acne lesions. It also may help prevent skin cancer, according to the Department of Anticancer Drug Development at the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute. With the limited available research on the benefits of topically applied epigallocatechin gallate, it is too early to tell how effective the ingredient is at treating acne or providing cancer protection. Do not rely on creams containing epigallocatechin gallate to protect your skin from cancer; instead where sunscreen. EWG gives epigallocatechin gallate a low-hazard rating.
Special Purpose Ingredient: Zinc PCA
Zinc PCA, which is the zinc salt of PCA, moisturizes skin while regulating oil production, making it a useful ingredient for oily skin types. EWG gives Zinc PCA a low-hazard score.
Special Purpose Ingredient: Retinyl Palmitate
Retinyl palmitate is a form of vitamin A used as an anti-aging ingredient to rejuvenate the skin. EWG gives retinyl palmitate a moderate-hazard score.
Emulsifiers bind together water and oil based ingredients in moisturizers. Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer contains the following moisturizers: trideceth-6 and alcohol. The EWG gives trideceth-6 a low-hazard score. Proactiv does not state which type of alcohol is in the green tea moisturizer, so the safety rating is unknown.
Fragrances in moisturizers mask the odor of non-pleasant smelling ingredients and add a nice scent to the finished product. Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer contains the following fragrances: fragrance (parfum), alpha-isomethyl ionone, butylphenyl methylpropional, citronellol, hexyl cinnamal, hydroxycitronellal and linalool. The safety of the first fragrance, simply listed as fragrance (parfum) is unknown, because the exact ingredient is not specified. All of the other fragrances, except for the butylphenyl methylpropional, which is not rated by the EWG, are rated as moderate-hazard by the EWG.
Preservatives prevent the growth of bacteria in moisturizers to prevent the product from spoiling. Practiv Green Tea Moisturizer contains the following preservatives: ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben and phenoxyethanol. The EWG rates all of these preservatives as moderate-hazards.
