Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it serves purposes that range from protecting your other organs to regulating your body’s temperature. It’s important to take care of your skin to keep it functioning properly. The right skin care regimen can ensure that your skin is healthy, maintains elasticity and has a natural glow.
Cleaning your skin on a regular basis is one of the most important practices to keep it healthy and glowing. Wash your skin gently using a mild, nonalcohol soap and warm water. While hot water may feel good, it pulls the moisture out of your skin, causing it to become dry. When washing your face, use your fingertips; a washcloth, mesh sponge or other type of scrubbing object could irritate your skin.
Makeup Must Dos
To maintain the health of your facial skin, wash your hands before applying makeup. Also, clean your makeup brushes on a regular basis and keep your makeup products tightly sealed when not in use. Throw away mascara after three months and discard your other makeup products if they change colors or develop an odor.
Dry, harsh air and overusing soaps and perfumes can dry out your skin, causing it to become rough and itchy. Use lotions, creams and moisturizers to keep your skin properly moisturized. As an alternative to expensive products, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests using petroleum jelly to moisturize rough hands, elbows and feet that are cracked. Drinking a sufficient amount of water also helps to keep your skin moisturized so it can maintain its elasticity.
While some people think sun protection is only necessary when you’re going to be outdoors for long periods of time, you need to exercise caution whenever you’re out in the sun; exposure can result in skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you use sunscreen 365 days a year. Avoid being in the sun during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is most intense. Wear long-sleeved shirts and wide-brimmed hats to provide protection from the sun’s rays. Choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15.
Proper nutrition is an important element of skin care. Vitamin A, which is found in liver, carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and broccoli contributes to good skin health. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in walnuts, flaxseed, salmon and canola oil, keep moisture in the body. Selenium, which is found in tuna, beef, turkey and cod, helps to keep skin smooth and tight. Vitamin C, which is found in sweet potatoes, citrus fruits, carrots and papayas, assists in the production of skin collagen.
