Those dark brown spots that often show up on the hands, face, back and neck as you get older are called age spots. According to a report reviewed by Harvey Simon, MD, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, aging leads to a slower division of skin cells which results in the thinning of the skin. With this thinning in the layers of the skin, the melanin that is produced in the skin tends to lump together, creating sporadic, darker age spots. Age spots can be treated by a dermatologist through various means, all of which can become quite expensive. You can also make this simple recipe at home for lightening and removing age spots.
Measure 1/2 cup of plain yogurt (preferably organic) and 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and put in a blender. The yogurt contains lactic acid, which increases cell turnover and helps renew the skin. Apple cider vinegar helps regulate the pH level of the skin, and also encourages the renewal or exfoliation of the skin.
Roll a fresh lemon under your palm, along a countertop, and then cut in half. Squeeze the juice from one of the lemon halves and then add it to the yogurt and vinegar in the blender. Do not add the seeds. Lemon contains citric acid which helps lighten the skin. You can substitute with an orange.
Cut a large leaf from an aloe vera plant, and slice it in half lengthwise. Using a spoon, scoop out 2 tbsp. of the fresh aloe vera gel and add to the blender. If you do not have an aloe vera plant, you can purchase fresh aloe vera gel from a health food store. Aloe vera helps protect and smooth the surface of the skin.
Blend all ingredients for 30 to 45 seconds. Transfer the mixture to a glass jar that can be sealed.
Apply the mixture to your age spots using gentle, circular motions. Allow to dry for 15 minutes, and then add a second layer. Allow to dry for 15 minutes, and then add a third layer. Allow the third and final layer to dry for 30 minutes.
Rinse the spot remover from your skin, and moisturize as usual. Use a moisturizer with a minimum SPF of 15 to protect from sun damage. This treatment should be repeated twice daily.
Refrigerate spot remover for future use.
To protect yourself from further skin damage and age spots, limit sun exposure.
Do not leave the age spot remover on when going out into the sun, as it can cause skin sensitivity.
