Fabulous Face Scrubs
Establishing a daily facial regimen helps keep your skin healthy, and facial scrubs are a fantastic place to start. Before bed, use a gentle facial scrub or exfoliator to remove makeup, dead skin and dirt that has accumulated throughout the day. To use a facial scrub, start by wetting your face with warm water. Take a scrub of your choice and apply to your face using either your fingertips or a soft-bristled facial brush. Gently work the scrub all over your face in a circular motion, being careful to avoid delicate eye areas. Lastly, rinse your face with warm water and gently blot dry.
The deep-cleansing warmth of a weekly facial hydrates, keeps skin supple, and gently opens pores. Fresh mint leaves, herbal teas, lavender flowers, and dried herbs such as rosemary or sage, all make excellent choices for facial steams. Essential oils can also be added to your facial steams for aromatherapy benefits. Place your steam ingredients into a medium-sized bowl and pour hot water (temperature should not exceed 140°F) over contents of the bowl. Pull your hair back and lean over the bowl with a towel over your head to trap the steam. After 10 minutes, splash your face with cool water and pat it dry. If you are currently experiencing a breakout, or have rosacea, avoid using steam as it can irritate the condition.
Easy DIY Masks
No facial is complete without a mask. Masks are more intensive cleaning remedies and should be used no more than once a week. Fruits, grains, cream, honey, eggs, and many other inexpensive ingredients can be used for food masks. Facial masks can be as elaborate or simple as you require. If you're pressed for time, rub cut strawberries, pineapple or papaya onto your face and rinse off after 10 minutes. The enzymes in these fruits break down dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling fresh and brighter. When using chunkier masks, wipe off excess ingredients before washing your face to avoid clogged drains.
Toners are often an afterthought when it comes to skincare routines. Typically applied daily to freshly washed faces, toners help remove the last traces of any cleanser or scrub you may have used. Witch hazel and rosewater are two popular toners used for their different qualities. The former is a natural astringent while the latter is skin-softening and aromatic. To use toners, saturate a clean cotton ball and gently rub all over your face. For a cool, midday pick-me-up, keep a small bottle of toner in the refrigerator and spritz your face as needed.
