Starbucks' New Unicorn Frappuccino Is Going to Slay on Instagram

Unless you live under a rock, you’re well aware that unicorn foods are all the rage — so it should come as no surprise that Starbucks has joined in on the whimsical rainbow fun and released a Unicorn Frappuccino for one week only.

The secret item is available from April 19 to April 23 at participating Starbucks locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico, according to a press release. Before the drink's debut, Starbucks employees were amping up excitement by posting photos on social media of the vibrant “flavor-changing” frappe, which the company touts is “only available if you believe.”

Now those same baristas are wishing the sparkly drink had never been invented. "Please don't get it! I have never made so many Frappuccinos in my entire life," exclaims Colorado barista Braden Burson in a video originally posted to his Twitter. "My hands are completely sticky. I have unicorn crap all over my hair and on my nose. I have never been so stressed out in my entire life. If you love us as baristas, don't order it!"

If you're thinking of ordering a #UnicornFrappuccino, please don't. But, please share this PSA from @Braden Burson #BaristaLife #Starbucks 🦄🙅🏻‍♂️

Let’s face it: Starbucks created this drink for Instagram and definitely not to make baristas happy or provide a healthy drink option to customers. The company explains, “Like its mythical namesake, the Unicorn Frappuccino comes with a bit of magic — as you sip and stir, the color of the beverage magically changes from purple to pink and the flavors evolve from sweet and fruity to tangy and tart.” Sounds like an Instagram Story waiting to happen.

According to the release, the beverage is made with “a sweet dusting of pink powder, blended into a crème Frappuccino with mango syrup and layered with a pleasantly sour blue drizzle.” It’s finished with vanilla whipped cream and a sprinkle of sweet pink and sour blue powder topping.

LIVESTRONG.COM’s social media guru Bryce Christian indulged in the magical beverage this morning at his local Starbucks location in New York. He likens the taste to “a mango crème ice-cream bar,” adding that the optional blue drizzle “gives it an extra sour punch.”

But before you decide to spend the next few days gorging on Venti Unicorn Frappuccinos, you may want to consider its not-so-healthy stats. Business Insider spoke to a Starbucks representative who explained that the drink is made with whole milk and whipped cream. The smallest size available contains 280 calories and a whopping 39 grams of sugar. (For context, that’s the same amount of sugar that’s in a can of Coke and more than twice the calories in a regular Starbucks Coffee Frappuccino.)

The healthier alternative is to hold the whip and order the drink with almond milk, but we’re still talking 170 calories and 34 grams of sugar. The American Heart Association recommends that men consume no more than 36 grams of sugar per day and that women consume no more than 24 grams, so just a tall Unicorn Frappuccino contains more sugar than any of us should be ingesting in a 24-hour period.

You only live once. Unicorns are rare, and Starbucks’ Unicorn Frappuccino is only available for a short time. So we say go ahead and order one — just don’t make it a Venti, and be sure to tip your barista.

What Do YOU Think?

Are you into the unicorn foods craze? Have you tried the Unicorn Frappuccino? How often do you indulge in sugary drinks?
