Wedding-Decorating Classes & Schools

by Ashley Walton, studioD

It can be difficult finding the right place to pursue a creative career, such as one in wedding planning and decorating. Some schools offer online courses, while others offer a one-time course, and it may be hard to tell which ones are worth your time and money. The most reputable schools in wedding planning and decorating provide value, hands-on experience and quality faculty.

The International School of Hospitality

The International School of Hospitality in Las Vegas focuses on wedding coordination and wedding design. The program emphasizes project-based, hands-on experience, which many courses don't offer. Students learn how to plan, design, manage and coordinate traditional, non-traditional, destination, cultural and fantasy weddings. In addition to attending classroom lectures, students get a chance to plan and complete an entire wedding from start to finish, meaning students graduate with a professional portfolio to use as a sample for clients in the future. The program also requires an internship.

Institute of Wedding and Event Design

With locations across the country, the Institute of Wedding and Event Design offers hands-on training and instructional classes for beginners and professionals. Whether you’re looking to start your own business, work as a wedding consultant or increase profits for your current business, this program offers small classes, one-on-one instruction and events training. Classes include subjects such as backdrop mastery, table and ceiling draping, chair and table décor and wedding ceremony décor.

The Wedding Planning Institute

With a growing network of over 2,000 colleges and universities offering its curriculum, classes from The Wedding Planning Institute can be found online or in classrooms across the nation. Students learn textbook principles and then apply them to real-world situations. Through courses, students learn how to manage relationships with clients and vendors as well as how to write business plans and understand contracts, fee structures and service offerings. Students are also encouraged to apply for six-month internships, customized for each student’s goals.

California State University, East Bay

At California State University, East Bay students can choose to join the Wedding Planner Certificate Program. Those who enroll in the program learn how to design, plan, coordinate and evaluate weddings. The program helps prepare students to work as independent wedding consultants or as wedding planners in a hotel, resort or event-management firm. The coursework includes learning how to budget and develop a timeline as well as instruction in wedding customs, industry trends and managing and selecting vendors. At the end of the program, students create a staging guide for a simulated wedding, giving them practical experience.

Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants

The Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants is an international organization that offers classroom training or home-study options for taking wedding-planner courses. Students have the option to earn a certificate in wedding consulting, or they can take classes to help them get started in a career. Training courses include topics on how to start a wedding consultant business, how to work with vendors and how to market your business.
