A Tuna Steak Dinner

by Kathryn Hatter

Tuna steaks, light yet satisfying and full of vitamins and minerals, can appeal to youngsters when you prepare them in a tasty way. Add the right ingredients and tuna steaks will cook up tender and moist. They are very easy to cook and when served with tempting side dishes they make a nutritious and enjoyable family dinner.

Preparation

Use a combination of acidic liquids to break down the tuna steak fibers, which will make the fish more tender. After marinating the tuna steaks in a powerful liquid -- such as lime juice, lemon juice or white wine vinegar -- flavor the meats with seasonings and herbs that will pack a delicious punch and please your family's palate. Use a combination of coarse salt, black pepper, minced garlic, ginger and tarragon. Vary the seasonings for kids with less adventurous tastebuds, using a mild but flavorful salad dressing and dip mix. Rub the seasonings into the tuna flesh with your fingers, and chill the tuna steaks in the refrigerator for a short time for the flavors to peak.

Cooking Methods

Grilling may be one of the easiest and most delicious ways to took tuna steaks. Fire up the grill and arrange the coals or turn on the burners to medium-high heat. Add the tuna steaks and cook them for about five minutes on each side. You can also pan-fry tuna steaks on medium-high heat for about the same length of time. Add a dash of dry dressing and seasoning mix to the tuna just before you place it in the pan to give it a last-minute flavor boost.

Scrumptious Sides

Boil some small new potatoes until they are fork-tender. Drain the potatoes and toss them with creamy ranch or creamy herb salad dressing for a fast and delicious side dish. Instead of potatoes, boil angel hair pasta until it tests al dente. Toss the cooked pasta in olive oil with dry dressing and dip mix and coarse salt and pepper to taste. Don't forget the vegetables -- keep it simple by serving a tasty leaf lettuce salad with grape tomatoes and cucumber slices. Top the salad with fat-free dressing in flavors to please all family members.

Dazzling Dessert

Finish a delicious tuna steak meal in high style with strawberry shortcake. Serve low-fat refrigerator biscuits, still warm from the oven. Slice them in half and top them with sliced strawberries. Add homemade whipped cream or vanilla ice cream over the top. Get your kids involved and let them put together their own shortcake desserts or ice cream sundaes.
