Tricks to Spruce Up Yellow Box Cake Mixes

by Aya Pauli

Sprucing up a yellow cake from a mix is about as simple a task as you can get in the cake world. Yellow cake is a sweet dessert with a buttery vanilla flavor, which makes it very versatile. Experiment with the many to turn the mild-flavored cake mix into something special.

Get Fruity

Fresh or dried, fruits pair well with yellow cake mix. Stir dried cranberries into the mix and top the finished cake with cranberry syrup for a tangy sweetness. Add diced strawberries to the cake and cover it with cream cheese frosting for a strawberry shortcake-style dessert. Use apple juice instead of some of the liquid called for in the mix, such as water or milk, to give the cake a light hint of natural sweetness. Mix dried banana chips, dried mango and dried pineapple into the cake and top it with coconut frosting for a tropical twist.

Spice It Up

Spruce up your cake with spices to take it from mellow to marvelous. Sprinkle cinnamon into the cake mix and top it with vanilla frosting for a whisper of spice. Mix the cake with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and allspice, then top it with apple frosting for an apple-pie flavored treat. Stir candied lemon zest, candied lime zest and ground ginger into the mix and top it with lemon frosting for a tangy sweet. Ground coriander, cinnamon, clove, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg and lemon zest give the cake the flavor of chai tea.

Step into Syrup

Replace a small amount of the liquid called for in the mix with gooey syrup to give the dessert an extra-sweet kick of flavor. Lightly mix dark chocolate syrup into the prepared cake mix to create a swirled chocolate and yellow cake that pairs well with almost any frosting. Stir butterscotch syrup into the cake and cover it with butterscotch frosting to enhance the sweet butter flavor of the mix. Add caramel syrup to the cake mix and top it with chocolate frosting for an indulgent dessert, or use the syrup as a topping. Poke holes in the cooled yellow cake with a fork and drizzle the cake with strawberry syrup to create a marbled berry treat.

Go Nuts

Nuts are a go-to ingredient for adding flavor and a light crunch to any dessert. Stir sliced almonds into yellow cake mix and top it with lemon frosting. Add shredded coconut and chopped Macadamia nuts to make an extra sweet and nutty dessert that pairs particularly well with chocolate frosting. Sprinkle chopped pecans into the yellow cake and top it with caramel frosting for a pralines-style sweet. Mix chopped walnuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts with yellow cake and top it with maple frosting for a potently nutty dessert.
