Top Undergraduate Accounting Programs in the U.S.

With the corporate domain of businesses and organizations rising all over the world, accounting and finance have come to play an extremely important role, creating a great demand for professionals. Moreover, with the strong impact of globalization, business has spread and become highly dynamic, enhancing the need for accounting professionals at all levels of work. With rankings from "U.S. News and World Report" and "Bloomberg Businessweek," these top accounting programs are highly competitive.

The University of Texas at Austin

According to "U.S. News and World Report," issued in 2012, the top program in the nation for accounting is found at UT Austin. With selective admissions, this public institution is highly regarded for its accounting undergraduate program. Students at this university can choose between a bachelor of business administration (BBA) in accounting or a finance major with accounting emphasis. The BBA program requires 21 hours of accounting and is perfect for those seeking a job in government or industry. The finance major with an accounting emphasis recommends 12 accounting hours, and students can choose between the corporate track or financial institutions track.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Ranked No. 2 in the accounting rankings, this program stands out for a number of reasons. Undergraduate students can choose to pursue the bachelor of science in accountancy or a unique, combined bachelor/master in accounting science that prepares students for a career in public or private accounting. Furthermore, it fulfills the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination's 150-hour requirement for the state.

Brigham Young University

The bachelor of science degree in accountancy program, offered at Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management, offers a wide range of accounting courses for students. The accounting program is ranked No. 1 by "Bloomberg Businessweek" and No. 3 by "U.S. News and World Report." The undergraduate degree program is highly valued and regarded for admissions into a master’s degree program.

University of Pennsylvania

Ranked No. 4 by "U.S. News and World Report," this university was founded by Benjamin Franklin. Students in the accounting program not only study accounting, but mathematics, statistics, economics, finance, humanities and behavioral science, as well. The result is a well-rounded graduate who is ready for an advanced degree or a career in accounting. The program at Penn prepares students for the CPA exam, and provides alternate options for students seeking to practice accounting in other states, so as to fulfill the necessary requirements.
