Top Ultrasound Schools in the USA

by Rudy Miller, studioD

A degree from one of the top ultrasound schools gives you a decided advantage over other job applicants. Only 33 U.S. bachelor's degree programs in diagnostic medical sonography are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Of these, only a handful made a list compiled by FindTheBest.com, which ranks programs based on admission standards, student retention rates and an average of rankings by other publications.

University of Iowa

The University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine offers bachelor’s degrees in radiologic technology, diagnostic medical sonography and radiation therapy. The school in Iowa City has its own research hospital which performs more than 300,000 examinations and treatments a year. Since 2001, every graduate of the school's diagnostic medical sonography program passed the certification exam for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Every Iowa student since 2010 either got a job in the field or went on to pursue further education.

Seattle University

Seattle University’s diagnostic ultrasound program is one of only three accredited four-year programs in the western U.S. For 22 straight years, a Seattle student has won the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers’ original research award. The school has a computerized classroom, anatomical models and a laboratory library. Students can study general vascular or cardiac vascular sonography. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA to graduate.

University of Missouri, Columbia

University of Missouri, Columbia, was the first school in the United States to offer a Master of Health Science degree in ultrasound. The school also offers a Bachelor in Health Science degree and has 25 sites statewide for clinical training. Students accepted to the program must agree to uphold a standard of ethical behavior. The curriculum starts with liberal arts and introductory science courses in the first two years and builds up to specialized training in the final two years.

Rochester Institute of Technology

The Rochester Institute of Technology’s diagnostic medical sonography department has a state of the art ultrasound scanning suite, which includes an OB-GYN simulator that student's named, Fiona. Only a few of these simulators are available worldwide. Sonography students will intern at two or more approved medical facilities. Teachers will monitor the clinical internship and students will return to class for lectures, presentations and tests three days per month in the internship. The program has a pre-medical option for students who pursue further study to become doctors, dentists or veterinarians.
