The Top Five Universities for Interior Design in Australia

Interior designers plan space and choose fixtures and finishes in homes and work areas with the goal of creating efficient, attractive and safe environments, giving equal attention to function and aesthetics. They may be charged with renovating an existing space or working with architects and builders in designing a space from the ground up. Students considering studying interior design in Australia have the opportunity to attend schools with global recognition and study with faculty members who are practicing professionals known for their achievements and expertise in the field of interior design.

University of Technology, Sydney

Times Higher Education World University Rankings places the University of Technology in Sydney among the top 400 universities in the world, and QS World University Rankings has it at 284th. QS also gives the school five stars for excellence in higher education in areas that include engagement, facilities, innovation and internationalization. The university offers three degree programs for the study of interior design including the Bachelor of Design (honors) in interior and spatial design, a Bachelor of Design in interior and spatial design, and the combined degree of Bachelor of Design in interior design / Bachelor of Arts in international studies. The degree program emphasizes hands-on experience and the employment of the latest technologies. Many faculty members are working professionals and design industry leaders.

Whitehouse Institute of Design

In 2013, the Australian Council for Private Education and Training selected the Whitehouse Institute of Design as a finalist in its Award for Excellence in Higher Education. The college, which has campuses in Sydney and Melbourne, was founded in 1988 and offers the Bachelor of Design in interior design. Former interior design students have won the Student of the Year award from Design Industry Australia and created the winning space in the interior design competition hosted by Australian television show Grand Designs Live. The school accepts students into its interior design program based on a combination of academic performance and creative potential. Applicants must submit a creative portfolio, complete an assessment task, and participate in an interview, which can be conducted by telephone for overseas applicants.

University of New South Wales

The University of New South Wales is a research and teaching university located in suburban Kensington, just minutes from downtown Sydney. Times Higher Education lists the University of New South Wales among the top 100 universities in the world and gives the school a rating of 84.8 percent for its international outlook. Suncorp Bank named the university a "power institution" and awarded it first place in the Suncorp Bank Power Index for its record of producing a number of Australia's chief executive officers. The school's Built Environment department offers a Bachelor of Interior Architecture and post-graduate degrees in related disciplines including architecture and urban development and design. Postgraduate students may submit a proposal and an expression of interest to be considered for a research degree program.

Monash University

Times Higher Education recognizes Monash University in Melbourne as 91st among universities in the world, and QS World University Rankings lists it at 61st. The school tied for first place in the Suncorp Bank Power Index for its record of producing Australia's chief executive officers. About 63,000 students attend the school, and about 22,000 are international students. The university offers a Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree within a program that emphasizes the balance of creative design and construction technology. Between the third and fourth years of study, students participate in a six-week internship with an interior architecture studio or related business with a goal of building confidence and establishing industry contacts.

Queensland University of Technology

Ranked among the top 300 universities in the world by Times Higher Education, Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane was established in 1849 as the Brisbane School of Arts. The school took its new name in 1989 and maintains three state-of-the-art campuses. The school's department of creative industries offers a Bachelor of Design (honors) in interior design and postgraduate research degrees in related fields including a Master of Design and Doctor of Creative Industries. The degree program emphasizes real-world applications of design. The school sponsors international study tours to Italy, Switzerland, Germany and France. Students also have the option of combining the interior design major with selected minors or another major.
