Top Cities for Personal Trainer Jobs

Personal trainers have a few different employment options. As of 2010, 61 percent of trainers were employed in fitness and recreational centers. Some find work in educational institutes or hospitals, while others are self-employed. Although the occupation is expected to grow 24 percent between 2010 and 2020, opportunities are most likely to be established in densely populated areas.

Chicago, Joliet and Naperville in Illinois

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the metropolitan area of Chicago, Joliet and Naperville, Illinois, held the most opportunity with 11,900 fitness instructor positions as of May 2012. Planet Fitness is one chain populating the area, with eight locations in Chicago alone. Chicago is also home to a division of the National Personal Training Institute, established in 1997 to certify fitness professionals and hire highly qualified instructors.

New York City and White Plains in New York

In combination with the township of Wayne, New Jersey, New York City and White Plains, New York, held 9,510 personal training positions as of May 2012. New York City and White Plains offer eight Planet Fitness facilities and 10 Crunch Gym locations. On top of the hotels and country clubs that hire trainers, the New York Sports Club Network features 37 gym and club locations in Manhattan alone, with several others in surrounding boroughs.

Los Angeles, Long Beach and Glendale in California

Los Angeles, Long Beach and Glendale held 5,790 jobs for trainers as of May 2012. Long Beach features several recognized fitness facilities such as Fit Stop and the UFC Gym, known for training individuals to participate in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The Prime Buyer's Report noted Total Woman in Glendale and Meridian Sports Club in Los Angeles as two of the best health clubs and fitness studios in the area.

Boston, Cambridge and Quincy in Massachusetts

As of May 2012, the BLS reported 5,630 personal training positions existed throughout Boston, Cambridge and Quincy. Another division of the National Personal Training Institute is situated in Boston, surrounded by 11 recognized Boston Sports Clubs and three Equinox Fitness Clubs. Planet Fitness has established a gym in each of these cities, among several other competitors.
