Top Biblical Theology Schools

Students who attend the top biblical theology schools in the nation study a wide variety of theological perspectives and religious doctrines. The top schools are accredited by The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and include Protestant, Roman Catholic and Orthodox schools of theology. Although "U.S. News & World Report," generally considered one of the top university ranking sources, does not specifically rank theology schools, some stand out for their rich history, teaching staff, diversity or religious teachings.

Harvard Divinity School

Harvard Divinity School (HDS) is one of Harvard University’s oldest professional schools. The university ranks first overall among national colleges in 2013 by "U.S. News & World Report." The nonsectarian school teaches students interested in religious studies or leadership positions in a variety of organizations. A diverse population of students is represented within the HDS four degree programs and the faculty and staff are some of the most respected scholars in the world for their religious studies. Many HDS graduates work in academic careers, while others become ministers or work in public service positions, the HDS website reports.

Yale Divinity School

Yale University’s variety of educational programs, research facilities and high quality faculty qualify the school for an overall third place ranking among all colleges in the nation, according to "U.S. News & World Report." Yale University’s Divinity School is a graduate school that prepares students to serve in church and societal leadership positions during the school’s Master of Divinity, Masters of Arts in Religion and Master of Sacred Theology programs. The interdenominational school boasts a diverse student body and highly trained faculty comprised of a variety of faith groups. The school has a rich history of religious studies, with the university’s roots reaching as far back as 1701, the Yale Divinity School website states.

Duke Divinity School

Duke University is highly regarded for research and professional studies and ranked eighth overall in the nation by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2013. Duke Divinity School has a rich tradition for providing diverse research-based religious instruction to students from around the world. Comprised mostly of United Methodist students, Duke Divinity School teaches about all denominations. Duke Divinity School students are some of the youngest and most diverse theology students in the nation, according to the Duke Divinity School website.

University of Notre Dame

The Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame introduces students to areas like moral theology, Christian history, liturgy, biblical studies, systematic theology and world religion, according to the school’s website. Students work with mentors to learn to work in a variety of professional situations. The school offers a variety of degree programs, including a Theology minor, major and several graduate programs. Many graduates of the program are world-renowned religious theology scholars.
