Top Accredited Colleges With an Accounting Program

by Nadia Archuleta

An accounting program is an excellent fit for students with an eye for detail and a head for numbers. Accounting majors study methods of gathering, recording and analyzing finances. Accounting programs teach students to use accounting information systems, create balance sheets and understand everything about tax law. Strong colleges enjoy accreditation through The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

The University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business

The McCombs School of Business has consistently been ranked No. 1 by "U.S. News & World Report" college ranking system for their accounting program. The school offers a bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. in accounting. Top professionals in the field bring cutting-edge ideas to the classroom. The McCombs Bachelor of Business Administration for accounting trains students to work both in industry and in government. They also offer a Master of Professional Accounting that prepares students to eventually work as executives. McCombs is accredited through the AACSB.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Another AACSB-accredited school, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers a Bachelor of Science in accountancy. Because the BS is not sufficient to qualify students to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination, the school also has an integrated Bachelor/Master of Science in accountancy. Undergraduate students take 26 credits of accounting courses with an additional seven possible as electives. They also complete their studies with a professional internship. The master's degree required for the CPA exam takes an additional year of study.

Brigham Young University Marriot School

Utah-based BYU has a Bachelor of Science in accounting degree that gives students a strong foundation in the field. The school advertises that their values are based on those of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their core values revolve around the students themselves, product leadership, connectivity with recruiters and leadership development. Receiving the BS in accounting requires taking 70 credit hours of accounting and management classes. Juniors in the program take an intensive 24-credit rotation, usually their only classes of that year. BYU is accredited through the AACSB.

University of Southern California Marshall School of Business

Students have the opportunity to earn a bachelor's, master's or Ph.D. through the Leventhal School of Accounting at USC. Undergraduate programs are individualized so that students can choose their own concentrations; they even have options for double-majors or an accelerated track to the master's degree. USC Leventhal offers five student organizations related directly to accounting, including the Accounting Society, associations for both Latino and black accountants and even Beta Alpha Psi, a co-ed fraternity for financial information professionals. USC Leventhal's accounting program, which is AACSB accredited, features three master's degree options: Master of Accounting, Master of Business Taxation and Master of Business Taxation for Working Professionals.
