Bryn Mawr, an affluent Philadelphia suburb, is a small community located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. This area was named after a farm in Northern Wales and the name Bryn Mawr means big hill. Parents living in this part of Pennsylvania will find there are a broad range of kids activities within 70 miles of Bryn Mawr.
You can take your kids for an animal adventure at one of the area zoos. Spend the day at the Elmwood Park Zoo (elmwoodparkzoo.org), only 9 miles away in Norristown. There are 16 acres with around 300 animals to see at this zoo. There's a petting zoo open in the spring through fall months -- and pony rides are available during the warm-weather months as well. Your kids can also participate in programs, designed to teach children in preschool through high school about animals and their habitats. Just 10 miles away, is the Philadelphia Zoo (philadelphiazoo.org). This was the first zoo to open in the United States. It covers 42 acres and is home to more than 1,300 animals. While you're there, you can even take a camel ride or float around the lake in a swan boat. Visit Lehigh Valley Zoo (lvzoo.org), 53 miles away in Schnecksville. You'll see more than 275 animals from 70 species in this 1,100-acre nature preserve. You can also attend special events at this zoo, like Music at the Zoo or Ottertoberfest.
Take your younger children to the Please Touch Museum (pleasetouchmuseum.org), 10 miles away in Philadelphia. This museum is packed full of interactive, hands-on exhibits and activities for kids age 7 and younger. Exhibits include Wonderland, City Capers and River Adventures. Your kids can also participate in art activities, watch a show, enjoy music and listen to stories. Your older kids might like The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University (ansp.org). This museum is also in Philadelphia and features exhibits such as Drawn to Dinosaurs: Hadrosaurus foulkii, Butterflies!, Science at the Academy and What Eats What. Kids can participate in programs through the museum like Safari Overnights, a spring break or summer camp, family field trips or take a workshop.
Amusement and Water Parks
Drive 30 minutes to Langhorne and you'll find Sesame Place (sesameplace.com), a theme park for the whole family. Your kids can ride roller coasters, go through a maze, bounce on inflatables and play games. Cool off at The Count's Splash Castle, with hands-on water play features, or fly down Slippery Slopes and splash into the waiting water. There are also live shows and parades at this park. Make the 50-mile drive to Allentown to take your kids to Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom (dorneypark.com). Inside the park, your kids can go on thrilling rides, step back in time to visit Dinosaurs Alive, enjoy live entertainment, or play in Planet Snoopy. Head over to Wildwater Kingdom when the weather is warm for lightning-fast water slides, a lazy river and a wave pool. Kids will love the children's water-play areas, like Island Water Works with more than 70 interactive water features and Kids Cove, which has a car wash theme.
Visit Solly's Farm (sollyfarm.com) with your family, just 24 miles away in Ivyland. You can go on a farm tour, so your kids can see how foods grow -- and even pick your own fruits and vegetables at special times throughout the year. You can choose from peas, pepper, tomatoes, peaches and strawberries. Or, attend one of the special events at the farm, such as the Easter Egg Hunt or Fall Harvest event. Enjoy nature with your kids at Tyler State Park (no website; 101 Swamp Road, Newtown; 215-968-2021), 35 miles away in Newtown. This park covers 1,711 acres and features a wide variety of activities including biking, hiking, fishing, boating, disc golf and sledding.
