With the breathtaking mountain peaks as a backdrop and many lively entertainment venues, Ruidoso, New Mexico has become a popular vacation spot for snow skiers in the winter and outdoor adventurers in the summer. Families travelling to this exciting resort town will be pleased to find several kid-friendly attractions both indoors as well as outdoors.
Pillow's Funtrackers (funtrackers-ruidoso.net) is a family fun center where you and the kids can try out the go-karts, putt around on the miniature golf course, bump into each other in the bumper boats, get lost in the mountain maze or just play a few rounds of arcade games. The Flying J Ranch (flyingjranch.com) is an Old West-themed fun center offering pony rides, cattle roping fun, gold panning, nature hikes, pistol shooting, a tee pee exhibit and chuck wagon food.
With an elevation of over 11,000 feet, Ski Apache (skiapache.com) is the southernmost ski resort in the country, creating many warm and sunny ski days. The resort offers lessons for kids from beginner on up. The Family Plan Ski Program creates an optimal time for parents and kids to learn to ski together. The Ruidoso Winter Park (ruidosowinterpark.com) features a tubing and sledding hill great for fun with the kids. It has a "Kidz Korral" for the under 42-inch guests and giant family tubes carrying up to six people. The hill has many turns, jumps and bumps along with a conveyor belt lift for easy access to the top of the mountain.
The Hubbard Museum of the American West (hubbardmuseum.org) is located just 4 miles down the road in Ruidoso Downs. It provides visitors with a look into the past with Native American artifacts, old wagons of the pioneers, cowboy artifacts and many old saddles. An interactive area for children is a part of the museum as well. The Old Dowlin Mill (olddowlinmill.org) is the oldest building in Ruidoso dating back to 1868. Visitors can watch as the mill grinds flour and corn meal as well as learn about the history of this site.
Grindstone Stables (grindstonestables.com) offers horseback riding for all ages and skill levels. Guides will take you and the kids through many of the scenic trails in the area. The Ruidoso Equine Experience (ruidosoequine.com) not only will provide you with trail riding experiences, but also train you and the kids in horse care and safety. Children will be able to groom the horses, learn to tie knots, put on a saddle, bridle the horses and learn how to clean hooves.
