Things to Do in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for Kids' Birthdays

by Rebecca Fiskaali, studioD

Whether you choose to stay indoors or party outdoors, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, offers plenty of venues for planning your next birthday celebration. Planning a children's party in south Florida requires careful consideration of the seasons. An outdoor party in the middle of a hot July may not be the best idea, but an indoor ice cream party may offer the perfect alternative. Location is key to ensure all guests enjoy themselves.

For the Artists

The Young at Art Museum, located in Davie, offers Saturday and Sunday party packages tailored to specific age groups with activities like magical tea parties, creating graffiti and climbing through rabbits holes. Guest lists are limited to 20 children and 20 adults. Rock Star Recording studios in Fort Lauderdale is best suited for children ages six to adult. Partygoers can create music videos, play instruments, schedule a black light dance or a rock star photo shoot. Limo rides to the studios are also available.

Family Entertainment Centers and Restauraunts

The WOW Factory in Coconut Creek is suitable for all ages. Kids can rock climb, play arcade games or laser tag. Babies can lounge in swings, play in foam pits or enjoy a puppet show. Most party packages allow up to 12 guests and are available any day of the week. Dave & Busters in Hollywood offers a full-service restaurant with party packages that include their massive arcade. Play cards are required to keep track of accumulated points and points are turned in for prizes. Jackson's Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant in Hollywood offers homemade ice cream in a variety of flavors with a ton of additional toppings. Ice cream creations are large enough to serve more than one person and their famous "Kitchen Sink" feeds up to 13 and comes with sparklers as candles.

Outdoor Parties

Butterfly World in Coconut Creek offers special exhibits including live exotic butterflies, hummingbirds and a live bug zoo. Groups of at least 15 party guests are accommodated on Saturdays at 10 a.m. Little Critters Corral brings a petting zoo to you, including goats, lambs, ducks, chickens, a baby pig and a calf. Ponies are also available upon request. You can rent park or beach pavilions for parties through Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation offices.

Learning While Partying

The Museum of Discovery and Science offers hands-on activities for all ages that combine fun with learning. Some exhibits include digging for dinosaur bones, holding crustaceans or experiencing a simulated air boat ride. Group rates are offered as well as tailored party packages. Flamingo Gardens in Dave offers a 60-acre botanical garden and animal sanctuary for explorers to enjoy. Birds, panthers, alligators, otters and flamingos in their natural habitats can be seen as you navigate through the sanctuary. Flamingo Gardens offers party packages as well as special exhibits, depending on the season.
