Named after the Big Sioux River's waterfalls and American Indian Sioux Tribe, Sioux Falls is now the largest city in the state of South Dakota. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, 24 percent of Sioux Falls residents are kids. During the summer months, with pleasant temperatures that average 73 degrees F, those kids can fill their spare time with a wide variety of summer programs, ranging from water activities and park programs to local day camps.

Daycare and Preschool Programs

If you're looking for a summer daycare program for your kids, Here4Youth Childcare Center offers a summer program. During the Sioux Falls school summer break, children can attend full time and participate in an array of activities at the center and out in the community, including special field trips to local swimming pools, zoos, museums and parks. Or, sign your kids up for the summer childcare program at EmBe. Kids in kindergarten through 5th grade can join the one-week programs or a program that runs the entire summer. Each session include theme-based activities that include science, crafts, cooking, sports, swimming and mentoring.

Parks and Recreation Programs

You can check out all of the programs available for kids through the City of Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Department. At the aquatic facilities, older kids can participate in Aqua Zumba and younger children can sign up for parent-child swimming lessons. If your child enjoys singing, he can join the Summer Singers program for kids in 3rd to 12th grade. Children who are 2 to 7-years-old can go to Fun in the Sun at McKennan Park to make colorful projects with spray bottles, ice cubes and paints. At the Musical Masterpieces program, children ages 4 to 10 can create musical instruments with simple, everyday objects like tin foil, paper plates and beans.

Library Programs

Your kids can go to the Siouxland Libraries to participate in a variety of free summer children's programs. Kids in kindergarten through 5th grade can join the free summer reading program to get some extra reading in during the summer and to participate in activities like a puppet show, wacky chicken show and crafts. Your whole family can attend Family Storytime to listen to exciting and silly stories, sing-along to music and participate in arts and crafts. Kids that are elementary-age can drop by the library during the scheduled movie times to watch a movie on the big screen with friends or go to a Wii Bit of Fun to compete against other kids in a Wii game.

If you're looking for a summer camp for your children, you'll find several in Sioux Falls. At the Sioux Falls YMCA, your kids can sign up for one of the sports camps like Lil' Shooters Basketball Camp for kids in kindergarten to 3rd grade, Fast Break Basketball Camp for 3rd to 5th graders and Golf Camp for kids 8 to 17 years old. Little Vikes is a day camp for 4- and 5-year-olds that feature outdoor activities like swimming and field trips. Kids 11 to 15 can go to Tailfeather Camp, a weeklong camp that includes firearms safety and shooting, fishing and wildlife conservation lessons. Your children could also attend a summer sports camp at Sioux Falls Christian, including football camps for boys in 6th to 12th grade, volleyball camps for girls in 5th to 12th grade and basketball camp for boys and girls in 4th to 12th grade.
