Whether you or your child have an interest in a specific subject or are looking for a way to prep for the post-secondary setting, summer pre-college programs offer ways to learn and grow in an enriching academic environment. From artsy explorations to scientific explorations -- and an array of subjects in between -- Florida and South Carolina both offer numerous pre-college courses for the southern student.

Using a University

Universities across Florida and South Carolina frequently offer summer pre-college programs for high school students. Although some programs admit only students who are already accepted to the school, others provide general summer pre-college courses for high schoolers who are either not ready to attend the university or are going elsewhere in the fall. The University of South Florida, University of South Carolina, Florida State College and Clemson University all offer summer pre-college programs that include general topics as well as specialized learning experiences for students in high school.

Artistic Adventures

High school students with a serious interest in the visual arts can learn new techniques, refine skills and gain an understanding of what a post-secondary arts education entails at a summer-time college prep program. The Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, offers a summer pre-college program that helps art students to develop portfolios and learn about the college application and admission process. Future college students looking for a focused prep program in a specific area of the arts industry may enjoy the University of South Carolina's fashion camp. This program features design training with professionals in the field.

Soon-to-Be Scientists

Future science majors can get a jump start on university life with a summer pre-college program in the area. The University of South Florida offers an array of science themed pre-college courses that change depending on the year. For example, in 2013, USF featured a STEM Academy in diabetes and medicine, a biomedical engineering program, computer science classes and a course in global sustainability. South Carolina students can consider Clemson University's summer scholars pre-college program, which features classes in animal and medical science, bioengineering, biology and physics.

Additional Academics

Teens with interests that lie outside of the arts and sciences can opt for a summer pre-college program that features additional academic tracks. For example, the University of Miami's summer schedule features specialized learning in areas such as business, law, international relations and sports administration. The University of South Carolina offers summer pre-college courses in creative writing, law and legal issues, pharmacy and computer gaming design.
