Schools for a Criminal Justice Degree in Miami

With its gorgeous beaches, studying in and near Miami appeals to many students who love the sun and sand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, a degree in criminal justice can grant a comfortable median salary of $58,040 through a variety of career fields that continue to rise in employment by 2.4 percent. Miami presents a few options for beach-loving students who want to study criminal justice.

Schools in the City

With an area covering over 35 square miles and a population of over 4 million residents, Miami is a sprawling city with several criminal justice schools located directly in its metropolis. Keiser University has campuses located all over the state of Florida with a location in Miami where students can earn a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice. Barry University, one of the largest Catholic universities in the Southeast was honored as one of “America’s Top Colleges” by Forbes magazine in 2013 for the third year in a row. Students enrolled at Barry University can earn a Bachelor of Science in criminology.

50 Mile Radius

There are a variety of schools located near Miami that offer criminal justice degrees. Located in Boca Raton, Florida Atlantic University is a 47-mile commute from Miami, and its school of Criminology & Criminal Justice offers bachelor's and master's degrees in the field. Johnson and Wales University, located in the suburb of North Miami, is a closer option, with a unique criminal justice curriculum that incorporates sociology and psychology with the theories and practices of criminal justice. The school is recognized for its award-winning crime scene facilities that boast technologically advanced equipment used in the industry. Students can pursue a bachelor's degree or a master’s in criminal justice management.

Online and Campus-Based Schools

Some students pursue online criminal justice degrees from schools that also offer campus locations. Typically, those who work full-time jobs benefit from this option for its convenient scheduling. Florida International University's Department of Criminal Justice offers both a bachelor's and master's degree in criminal justice with the option to learn on-site or fully online. The university also offers a Ph.D. in public affairs within a criminology backdrop through the joint collaboration of the College of Law and Department of Public Administration. Other hybrid schools, like ITT Tech, offer online degrees in criminal justice, as well as a campus located in Miami.

Community Colleges

Community colleges in and around Miami like Miami Dade College offer degrees in criminal justice; Miami Dade College enrolls more students than any other community college system in the United States. The school announced that in their fall semester of 2013 they will be admitting students surpassing the 2,000,000 mark. Miami Dade College offers associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in criminal justice. Their curriculum includes criminal justice courses in specialty areas like cyber crimes, forensics and homeland security.
