Rosemary Oil For Stimulating Hair Regrowth

Most men and women long for a head of thick, shiny hair. But age, stress, medical conditions and lifestyle factors can cause hair issues such as hair loss or thin, limp locks. Rosemary hair oil is a holistic treatment that could be effective in stimulating hair growth in some people.

Why Hair Loss Occurs

While it is normal for people to lose 50 to 100 hairs each day, there are a number of additional factors that cause hair to thin increasingly. Male- or female-pattern baldness is a hereditary condition where sex hormones contribute to hair loss. Hormonal changes resulting from pregnancy and childbirth, thyroid problems, and scalp infections can also cause hair to fall at a faster rate. Lifestyle factors such as wearing hairstyles that pull at strands as well as taking certain medications can also impact hair loss. Studies have also found that stressful events can cause hair to fall out.

Rosemary Hair Oil

Rosemary has traditionally been used to stimulate hair growth, and is still recommended as a treatment in holistic medicine because of the fact that it increases circulation of the scalp. A study published in the Archives of Dermatology found that 44 percent of patients who incorporated a daily scalp massage using jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, thyme oil, lavender, rosemary and cedarwood oil experienced increased hair growth.

Rosemary Hair Oil Recipe

To create your own rosemary hair oil at home, mix together 2 tablespoons of rosemary oil and one ounce of grapeseed oil. Massage this into dry hair each day and let stand for three minutes before bathing or showering. Another treatment option is to mix together 4 and a half teaspoons of jojoba oil in a small bowl with 6 drops of rosemary oil and 4 drops of cedarwood oil. Massage this into your scalp each night for two minutes every night and rinse the next morning.

Other Treatments

According to the Mayo Clinic, if a medical condition is the underlying cause of your hair loss, then medications can help. Otherwise, lifestyle factors including eating a balanced diet, avoiding tight hairstyles, and not tugging and pulling at the hair, can prevent hair loss. Those experiencing severe hair loss that is not responding to lifestyle treatments may consider hair plug or scalp reduction surgery or even wigs or hair pieces.
