The Role of Middle Management in a Nursing Home

Middle management plays a crucial role in the day-to-day running of a nursing home. Middle managers provide leadership and direction to departments, units and divisions within the facility to ensure excellent service delivery to patients. They are responsible for implementing institutional policies, staffing and supervision of the nursing home's staff. The middle management may include a nurse manager, service director and charge nurse. However, this can change to suit a specific nursing home's management structure.

Implementing Policies

Implementation of polices helps a nursing home achieve its goals in dispensing quality health care services in line with industry standards. The middle management ensures every employee in the nursing home complies with its policies. Middle managers ensure all nurses conduct themselves in a professional manner while attending to patients. They conduct induction programs to help new employees understand the facility’s policies, values and expected outcomes. When policies are reviewed, the middle management informs the junior staff about the changes and enforces them.

Staffing and Controlling

Staffing and controlling helps a nursing home acquire and retain human resources. The middle management assesses the staffing needs of the facility and advises the senior administrators on the next course of action. For instance, if there is an increase in the number of patients, the middle managers are responsible for carrying out a recruitment drive to identify and hire professionals who can add quality to the institution's health care delivery. The middle management monitors staff activities and periodically evaluates their performance to maintain high-level standards in provision of health care services.

A successful middle manager is committed to building a team of people dedicated to delivery of quality care for patients and their families. Middle managers enjoy working with junior employees to professionally contribute to the development of their careers, which is crucial in realizing organizational missions and goals. They strive to get all physicians, nurses and lab personnel working together as a team. The middle management works to create an environment where staff members air their views freely. The middle managers can, for instance, facilitate monthly forums where the nursing home’s employees can interact and establish good working relationships.

Enhancing Effective Communication

Provision of quality health care services depends on effective communication between the patients, providers and administrators. Middle managers, being at the level between senior administrators and support staff, act as intermediaries between the two parties. They speak the language of executives and staff, creating a proper channel of communication between them. For instance, if nurses have an issue they want the senior administrators to address, such as an increase in the number of off-duty hours, middle managers share the information with the facility’s administrators. To be an effective middle manager, you need to be savvy about the nursing home’s culture, politics and financial realities.
