How to Do a Resume for a Systems Analyst

by Richard Bashara

According to Worksmart, a California based program that helps people seeking employment, your resume should present the best facts about you concisely. In most cases, it is safe to assume that your resume will be part of a group of applications, so you will want to highlight your brightest characteristics quickly. In the case of a systems analyst position, it may help to present a functional resume that outlines your achievements as an analyst while also talking about work and education history. There are several versions of the functional resume template, but you should always have an objective/summary and a section for achievements, education, work history, and references.

Entry Level Systems Analyst

Download the template for a functional resume from Microsoft Office or another program you like open it in the word processor of your choice.

Fill in your name, address, phone number and email address at the top of the page.

Write an objective for yourself that describes what you hope to achieve with your skillset. Because a systems analyst will be expected to build a computer infrastructure, your objective should reflect your ability to use existing technology to build an effective network. Include any scripting knowledge you may have and a brief statement on your work history.

List your professional achievements, highlighting specific work you are responsible for. You should talk about specific software you have worked with, and testing you have participated in to finish implementing a network. Other topics you may want to list include wiring experience, experience testing and debugging. List the technology you have worked with by name. A proficiency in building and maintaining a wide variety of computer systems will help make you look more attractive to potential employers.

Briefly list your employers. This section should simply catalogue your work history, as you have already demonstrated your best attributes.

List any degrees or certifications you have. It’s common for a systems analyst to start down one career path and take classes to learn computers later on, but if you studied computer science, mention that. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, systems analysts usually have college degrees, so mention the highest degree you have earned.

List the best references you have accumulated during your career who can talk up your achievements. When you are finished with your document, click the “File” tab and then “Save.”

Senior Systems Analyst

Open the functional resume template from the sources in the word processor of your choice.

Replace your name and address with those in the sample.

Write a brief objective that describes your goals as a senior systems analyst. You will be expected to plan and implement systems, so say that part of your objective is to get to know the needs of the company. If you are already familiar with the company you are applying to, mention the specific items you plan to implement.

List your achievements, highlighting specific instances where you planned a successful implementation. According to The Ladders, don’t mistake your job description for an achievement, meaning that you should avoid using the IT budget you managed as a bullet point in achievements. Point out specific systems you implemented and tell what their positive impact was on the company -- in terms of dollars, wherever possible.

List companies you have worked with, but do not waste space talking about your job duties, as you will have already outlined your best achievements in the previous section.

Include your most recent degree earned, as well as any certifications you may have that further qualify you for the position.

List references that you have from your professional experience. When you are finished with your resume, click “File”, followed by “Save.”
