Reasons for Dating Older Men

May-December romances are nothing new, yet some people still find it hard to understand age differences in dating. Depending on the age gap, a younger woman dating an older man is often seen as taboo. However, there are many reasons why a younger woman would be interested in dating an older man, as well as plenty of reasons why doing so might work for her.

More Mature

Women are sometimes drawn to older men because of their maturity. Younger women typically seek a connection in a relationship, while men of the same age don't necessarily have the same need for a bona fide connection, according to author and clinical counselor Kim Olver, as discussed in the Psychology Today article, "Younger Women and Older Men." Younger men tend to be self-centered, especially if they are in the stage of figuring out who they are. This can mean they are less likely to commit to a woman. Further, women might find that men their own age are not as attentive or well-mannered in a relationship, according to behavioral psychologist Jo Hemmings in her book “Be Your Own Dating Coach: Treat yourself to the ultimate relationship makeover.” An older man is often more dependable than a younger one.

Experiences and Established Career

Life experience and a powerful career can make an older man attractive to a woman. Learning from their past mistakes may mean that they are able to give sage advice in many areas of life. Further, older men who are well established in their careers do not have to prove themselves as much at work, so they are able to devote more time to their relationships. The financial freedom that often goes along with an established career is something that a younger man who is just starting out doesn't have. Older men may also have clearer goals in life because they may be more in tune with themselves and what they want going forward.

Physical Intimacy

Along with life experience, older men may also be more experienced in the bedroom. Experience can make a man more confident in his abilities. Moreover, there may even be some biological advantages linked to age, notes author Hemmings. Changes in the testosterone-oestrogen ratio in an older man's body can make him more sensitive and nurturing in bed than a younger man.

More Straightforward

Older men are generally more aware of what they want in a partner, because of past experiences, so they are less likely to play games in a relationship. An older man may be better at vocalizing what he needs. Some women might appreciate this straightforward manner, particularly if they are tired of having to guess where their dates stand in their relationships.
