Raising Toddlers With Christian Values

by Alicia Bodine

Ephesians 6:4 states, "Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord." Toddlers are not born with Christian values. They must be raised by their parents to know the difference between right and wrong, and to have a godly character. Because toddlers are like sponges, start training them in the faith when they are young.

Read Together

Get your toddler used to hearing the word of God by setting aside some time each day to read the Bible together. You don't have to use an adult Bible either -- often the language is too complicated for toddlers to understand. Several toddler and children's Bibles are available that include pictures to hold your child's attention. Toddlers can learn a lot about making godly choices through stories about Jonah, Moses, Abraham, Noah and Jesus.

Play Together

Focus on the Family, a Christian evangelical group based in Colorado Springs, Colo., recommends acting out each Bible lesson with your toddler. Toddlers love to play and will remember the lesson better if it isn't just all reading. For example, draw a picture of Noah's Ark on a piece of poster board and encourage your child to match two animals together and take them to the ark. He could gather two of his stuffed teddy bears or locate a picture of two cats. You could also make a tambourine out of two paper plates and half a cup of rice. Play the tambourine and make up a tune to sing to one of David's Psalms.

Pray Together

Teach your toddlers the importance of prayer by demonstrating it daily. Your toddler needs to know he can talk to God when life is going well and when life gets tough. Let your toddler know that God wants to hear about his day and help him with any problems. Allow your child to see you praying, and set aside some time for the entire family to pray together.

Attend Church Together

One of the best ways to reinforce the Christian values you are teaching your toddlers at home is to take them to church regularly. Toddlers may not understand the sermons preached during the service, but they will learn by attending a Sunday school class. Sunday school classes are designed to engage younger children, while presenting them with important lessons on faith, godly character and salvation.
