Professional NBA Basketball Camps for Kids

by Jeremi Davidson, studioD

Professional basketball camps help young players to work on their skills and could assist them in reaching the collegiate or professional level. An interview with NBA Head Scout Ryan Carr found on the NBC Camps website suggests that young players should work on ball handling and shooting during the summer, as these skills are important for players at all positions. Players who attend NBA camps give themselves an advantage over other players, as they receive professional instruction on important basketball skills.

Team Camps

NBA teams often run their own basketball camps, with each having some of its own players and coaches teaching. Jason Kidd, for example, has attended the New York Knicks' camp in the past, reports the team's official website. This summer camp is open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18. It focuses on the fundamentals of basketball, such as shooting and defense, while teaching players to function as part of a team.

Michael Jordan's Camp

The Michael Jordan Flight School is held every year at the University of California, Santa Barbara and is open to boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 18. Attendees have the option of staying overnight while they attend the camp or finding alternative accommodations. Each day at the camp features lectures, work on fundamentals, team practices and games, so campers have the opportunity to receive instruction on all parts of their games. Campers should also note that Michael Jordan attends the camp on four of its five days to provide instruction for all players, reports the camp's official website.

Kevin Durant's Camp

NBA all-star Kevin Durant runs a summer camp at the University of Oklahoma Huston Huffman Fitness Center. The first day of camp is for boys and girls between grades one and four, while the second day is reserved for those between grades five and 12. Every attendee is able to learn from Durant himself, as he works on fundamental basketball skills and provides lectures for campers, notes ProCamps.com. The groups at this camp are kept small, so that each individual has time to work with Durant and his coaches.

IMG Academy

The camps run by IMG Academy are some of the most thorough in the nation and provide a number of options for those looking to take the next step in their basketball careers. These camps run anywhere from one week to seven weeks in length during the summer and three days to three weeks long during the fall and winter. Children between grades five and 12 are able to attend the various camps, where a professional coaching staff that is headed by former NBA coach Kenny Natt will help them with the fundamentals of basketball before working up to more advanced techniques. A total of 29 former attendees has gone on to become first round picks in the NBA draft since 2003, according to the IMG Academy website, making this a highly valuable program.
