According to the Texas Education Agency, to become certified as a Master Science Teacher you must have a minimum of three years teaching experience and complete a knowledge-based course of instruction through an approved educator program. Upon completion, you can sit for the elementary, middle or high school levels of the Master Science Teacher certification exam, the TExMaT, which measures your mastery of the content in the state curriculum and competency in all nine Master Science Teacher standards.
University of Texas at El Paso
The University of Texas at El Paso offers coursework you need to sit for any of the TExMaT exams. An extensive curriculum prepares you for the subject area portion of the Master Science Teacher exam as well as the skills to coach, mentor and consult with other teachers. Science courses include Societal Context of Science Education, Inquiry Science Education in Bilingual Settings and Tools, Standards, Technology, Safety and Ethics. Other courses include Leadership and Mentoring, Research for the Classroom, Authentic & Performance Assessment and Scholarly Writing for Educators. All coursework can be used toward a M.Ed., but you can receive certification without a master's degree.
Southern Methodist University
Of the three levels of certification -- elementary, middle and high school -- Southern Methodist University offers only the coursework required for the middle school certification. Upon the successful completion of four required graduate courses -- chemistry, life science, physics and earth and space science -- you qualify to sit for the middle school TExMaT. You can complete the preparation program in one year, with one course in the fall, one in spring and two over the summer.
Stephen F. Austin State University
The focus of Stephen F. Austin State University's Master Science Teacher preparation program is the integration of mathematics, science and technology. The university's Math, Science, and Technology Teacher Preparation Academy features a flexible schedule to accommodate teacher’s schedules. Special attention is paid to preparing you for the middle school and high school certification exams with specialized study guides and instruction. You will practice leadership skills through comprehensive coursework, by pairing with undergraduates in job shadowing opportunities and in preparing and leading STEM -- science, technology, engineering and math -- summer camps for school-aged children.
University of Texas at Austin
A result of the collaboration between the School and Engineering and the college of education, the University of Texas at Austin’s Master Science Teacher program offers a Master of Arts in STEM Education. This degree can be completed in three 9-week summer sessions on campus and four semesters of online course work. The final summer consists of work with a university research group and a final report that demonstrates your ability to apply advanced content knowledge to the teaching of engineering in middle and high school.
