Places to Take a Toddler in York, Pennsylvania

by Jane Rodda

York, Pennsylvania, also known as the White Rose City, is conveniently located within a two hour drive of both Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. With a population of 43,550, according to the 2012 U.S. Census estimate, you will find many places that would be excellent for toddlers in this south central part of Pennsylvania.

Museums and Tours

There are a few places that may get a toddler's attention. The Police Heritage Museum is a collection of police artifacts, old uniforms, police cars and equipment that officers at one time used to fight crime. Given the fascination with police cars and officers that toddlers display, this museum could be an exciting visit. One of the many factory tours in town is at the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery. Young eyes can get a glimpse into the pretzel-making process and even have a hands-on lesson in how to twist the pretzels.

Parks and Outdoors

The city of York maintains several parks that would be ideal for some unstructured outside time for toddlers. Albemarle Park has a twist slide, plenty of swings, climbing structures and lots of open green space. For an exciting opportunity to feed the ducks, Kiwanis Lake has walking paths along the waterfront with grass and wooded areas around the park. Farquhar Park has two different playgrounds with picnic areas and lots of open space. Twenty miles outside of York is Gifford Pinchot State Park, 2,338 acres of natural preserve with a lake as its main attraction. Toddlers would enjoy the nature exploration through the woods and farm fields.

Enrichment Programs

Your toddler would benefit from a program that aims to build motor skills and reach crucial milestones. Romp N Roll is a play and learn center for ages 6 and under. There are a number of classes especially for toddlers including art classes, building classes, gymnastics, dance, rhythm development, music movement and combo classes. Gymboree Play and Music offers classes for toddlers in gymnastics, sports, music, art and family participation. Its programs are designed to help toddlers learn and develop as they play and have fun. Gymnastics of York is a complete gymnastics facility offering parent and tot classes for 2-year-olds.

Indoor Play

When the weather is not quite right to play outside, it's good to have a few indoor options ideal for toddlers. Tumble Town features slides, tunnels, climbing structures, ball pits, tumbling mats, a rock wall and lots more. It is geared to kids 10 and under with areas especially for tots. Nine miles from York in Red Lion you can take your toddler to Atomic Bounce, where you'll find open bounce times with several inflatables, ride-on toys and large building blocks.
