by Ann Daniels

When planning a birthday celebration, it's not difficult to find the perfect location that caters to your child's interests in Nelson County, Kentucky. Plan a picnic, have a pizza party or do something a bit more unique. With all the choices available, the party is sure to be a fun-filled event.

Parks

Plan your child’s party at My Old Kentucky Home -- a park in Bardstown. The picnic area has grills, restrooms and a playground so you can host a birthday barbecue. Or, plan a birthday camp-out, as the park offers 39 campsites equipped with utility hookups. The kids might also enjoy catching a performance of The Stephen Foster Story, Kentucky’s official outdoor musical in the evening at the theater in the park. Alternatively, the Musical Bardstown Community Park is another location perfect for children’s parties. The playground, horseshoe pits and volleyball courts provide plenty of options to keep your party guests entertained. Picnic tables and grills are also available along with a pavilion that you can reserve.

Restaurants

Make a reservation at a local restaurant in Nelson County to celebrate your child’s big day. Plan a fun, pizza party at Rebecca’s Pepperoni Grill, which takes reservations. In addition to pizza, a kids’ menu is available with family-friendly cuisine such as chicken nuggets, ravioli and macaroni and cheese. Kreso’s Family Restaurant is a party-friendly venue that has a private room available for your birthday event. The menu offers plenty of dishes that kids typically enjoy such as hamburgers, French fries and spaghetti with red meat sauce.

Trains

If your child has a fascination with trains, Nelson County is home to some venues that will make his birthday party memorable. The Kentucky Railway Museum offers a 90-minute train ride to entertain your party guests. Depending on when your child is celebrating his birthday, special events and themed train rides -- like a ride with the popular character Thomas the Train -- are available. Special Christmas train excursions are offered in December where Santa makes an appearance -- and kids are served cookies and hot chocolate. My Old Kentucky Dinner Train is another option for a party, offering 90-minute children’s excursions during which party guests enjoy a meal while riding the railway. There are also special holiday excursions that kids will enjoy like a Halloween excursion in October and a North Pole excursion in December. Children’s menus and the children’s excursions are available to guests ages 3 to 12.

Other Venues and Activities

Your party guests might also enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride followed by a birthday cake or cupcakes. Take your guests on a carriage ride through Bardstown with Around the Town Carriage. The narrated tour is fun, kid-friendly and educational. Group rates are available. When the carriage ride ends, head over Sugar Buzz, a shop in downtown Bardstown that specializes in sweet treats. Choose from a variety of cakes, cupcakes, cookies and brownies to celebrate your child’s birthday. Sugar Buzz has party accommodations available, so call ahead to make reservations for your group.
