Paulding County, GA Children's Activities

by Jane Rodda

In the northwest corner of the Atlanta metropolitan area you will find the thick forests of Paulding County. It is much less densely populated than it would be if it were closer to the city, providing plenty of outdoor space and natural beauty. The county seat, Dallas, along with the towns of Hiram, New Hope, Braswell and Powder Springs make up this countryside community which has much to offer families with children.

Performing Arts

If you have young ones who love the theater, take them to the Dallas Theater Civic Center. Here you will find many live performances geared toward children including productions of familiar children's stories and puppet shows. Also at the theater, children ages 5 to 12 can sign up for a drama camp that will teach them all about the theater, culminating with a live performance of their own. For children who are particularly into dance, Dance Fever Studio in Dallas offers dance classes for all ages in various styles such as ballet, break dancing, hip-hop, pointe, tap and jazz.

Historical Sites

The Pickett's Mill Battlefield Historical Site in Dallas is one of the most well-preserved Civil War battlefields in the country. The 765-acre site features earthworks made by soldiers, self-guided tours of the area with hiking trails and markers, an 1800s pioneer cabin open for touring and a visitor center with artifacts and video presentations. Also in Dallas, The Paulding County Historical Museum is located in the original schoolhouse building from the 1800s. Here your young ones can discover the mystery of the bent trees, see several artifacts and learn about the significance of the Native Americans of the area.

Wildlife and Nature

Paulding Forest is a region set aside for wildlife and nature exploration. You and the kids can hike through the many trails, find some good fishing spots on Goldmine Lake or Twin Lakes, camp out for a few nights and canoe through the waters. For an excellent hiking or biking spot, the Silver Comet Trail runs through the county. It is an old railway converted into a paved trail that extends for 61 miles through three counties. The Paulding County portion runs through several of the city parks, providing plenty of access points.

Playgrounds and Fun Centers

Sara Babb Park in Dallas features an outdoor swimming pool, a playground, volleyball courts, tennis courts, open fields, grills and bike trails. Taylor Farm Park in Powder Springs provides the community with a half-acre lake, playgrounds, walking trails and picnicking areas. In Hiram you can go to Homer Leggett Memorial Park for a playground and walking trails. If your kids are looking for some indoor excitement, try out Sparkles Family Fun Center in Hiram. They can zap each other in the laser tag arena, play some video arcade games, go roller skating and bounce around in the inflatables area.
