Outfit Ideas for a High-Waisted Skirt

by Amanda Rumbalski

A high-waisted skirt is a wardrobe essential that defines a small waist and flatters curves. Available in various silhouettes and styles -- from short and fitted to long and flared -- a high-waisted skirt is a versatile piece that can work for both the office and a relaxing weekend. Pair with separates that allow the style to shine, and you'll be wearing your high-waisted skirt for years to come.

Casual T-Shirt

Pair a high-waisted fit-and-flare skirt that hits just above the knee with a basic t-shirt for a cute and comfortable spring ensemble. A solid, neutral-colored cap-sleeved tee with a scoop- or V-neck balances a skirt that boasts a busy print or bold color. If your skirt is a neutral color, play with color blocking and wear it with a bright tee. Dress up the neckline of your shirt with a statement necklace and finish with a pair of wedges. If you want to make the look office-appropriate, layer a cardigan over the t-shirt and switch out the wedges for ballet flats. Transition the outfit when temperatures drop with tights, a denim jacket and a scarf.

Trendy Crop Top

A crop-top sweater or tank pairs perfectly with a high-waisted miniskirt for a night out on the town. A cropped style further defines your waistline and allows any details on the waistband of your skirt to show; choose a crop top that only shows a sliver of skin for a more conservative approach. Experiment with print and color to create visual interest. Mix a high-waisted mini that has a large graphic with a crop top with a small print -- the key to pulling off this look is to have a uniform color running through the prints of both separates. For those who prefer to play with color, opt for a solid-colored, high-waisted mini and a top in a bright shade. Accessorize with an armful of chunky bangles, layered chain necklaces and black stilettos.

Feminine Blouse

A blouse tucked into a high-waisted pencil skirt is office-ready and shows you mean business. Tone down a bright or printed skirt with a blouse in a neutral color like white, gray or black. Pair a solid-colored skirt with a sheer blouse in the same color for a chic monochromatic look -- think head-to-toe black, navy or wine. Layer your blouse with a matching camisole for extra coverage to keep it professional, and wrap a thin belt around the waistband of your skirt for additional definition. Add minimal accessories like stud earrings or a delicate necklace and slip on neutral-colored ballet flats or heels.

Classic Button-Down

Juxtapose the feminine silhouette of a high-waisted maxi skirt with a menswear inspired, button-down chambray shirt. Chambray acts as a neutral, so this option works with a solid or printed high-waisted maxi skirt. Roll up the cuffs and tuck your shirt into your skirt to highlight your waist or show off any details near the waistband. Accessorize with an oversized watch or dangling earrings and ground the look with oxfords to carry on the boy-meets-girl vibe.
