Nationally Accredited Sports Medicine Colleges

Degree programs in sports medicine have increased in popularity over the last several years, according to Craig T. Greenlee in an article for "Diverse: Issues in Higher Education." Graduates of accredited educational programs in the discipline can choose many career opportunities from athletic trainer to professional sports team staff member. Sport medicine is a field that focuses on fitness, exercise and treating ailments resulting from sports and athletic activities. The most prominent sports medicine schools offer accredited degree programs, with a solid academic curriculum combining classroom instruction and practicum experiences related to athletic training, healthcare, exercise physiology and fitness.

University of Southern Mississippi

Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, The University of Southern Mississippi offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. Highly competitive, the university only accepts 16 students into the degree program yearly. The program requires 124 credit hours of coursework covering topics such as biomechanics, rehabilitation of sports injuries and sports psychology. The curriculum caters to students interested in pursuing careers as athletic trainers assisting with the healthcare and fitness needs of athletes.

Oregon State University

Scholars at Oregon State University have two degree options, a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training or in Exercise and Sport Science. The B.S. in athletic training is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. Students are eligible to take the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers examination after completing all coursework and clinical experiences. The bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sport Science features several specializations including Fitness and Nutrition, Physical Education, and Pre-therapy and Allied Health.

University of Wisconsin at River Falls

The Master of Science in clinical physiology degree at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls is accredited by the American College of Sports Medicine and Commission on Accreditation of the Exercise Sciences. All students enrolled in the program must complete an internship in a cardiac rehabilitation environment. The program is particularly pertinent for professionals concerned with promoting healthy lifestyle choices and physical activity among the aging.

University of Maine

At the University of Maine, the College of Education and Human Development allows aspiring athletic trainers to study for a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, undergraduates are introduced to theories associated with injury prevention and care combined with comprehensive clinical experiences at hospitals, schools and athletic facilities. Graduates are qualified to take the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification exam.
