In general, executive office administrators provide administrative support services to C-level executives, such as vice presidents, presidents and chief officers. They often pull together research, prepare complex reports and review confidential documents, as well as handle incoming calls, maintain general filing systems and supervise other support staff. Depending on the organization, executive office administrators may also act as the office manager. Due to the breadth of their responsibilities, salaries often exceed those of other administrative and clerical workers.
On average, executive administrative assistants brought home $50,220 a year in 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A survey by Office Team, a national administrative support recruiter, found that salaries varied by level of experience. As of 2014, those in senior-level positions earned anywhere from $48,000 to $65,000, while all other executive assistants started at $40,500 to $55,250 annually. If, however, a senior-level executive assistant supported a C-level executive, salaries ranged from $55,200 to $74,750 a year.
As with almost any administrative positions, executive office administrators can improve their salaries with certain skills and certifications. For example, earning a Certified Administrative Professional designation is known to increase wages by 6 percent a year, according to Office Team. At the senior level, an executive assistant is now looking at a salary of $50,880 to $68,900. Being certified as a Microsoft Office Specialist, or having the ability to speak more than one language, improves salaries by 8 percent and 11 percent, respectively. Salaries for senior executive assistants now range from $51,840 to $70,200 with an MOS certification, and from $53,280 to $72,150 with multilingual abilities.
In addition to skill set, earnings vary by location. Executive office administrators in New York earn some of the highest salaries, at an average of $64,890 a year, reports the BLS. Those working in California also fare better than most, averaging $56,180. In Texas, salaries average at $49,680, while salaries in Minnesota average at $47,290. Some of the lowest wages were found in Louisiana, where the average salary is $38,090 a year.
The BLS expects employment for executive office administrators to be good, with an average job growth of 13 percent from 2010 to 2020. This is almost on par with the national average for all U.S. occupations, a project growth rate of 14 percent. In this relatively large field, the 13-percent growth works out to over 150,000 new jobs over the course of a decade. Expect additional opportunities to develop as workers retire or leave the field.
