The Best Michigan Beaches for Kids

by Dell Markey

With prime frontage on four of the five Great Lakes and numerous inland lakes, Michigan has plenty to offer beach-goers. No matter where you are in the state, there is a beach nearby. However, Michigan beaches are not created equally. Some are nicer than others, especially for families with children.

Ludington

Situated on Lake Michigan, Ludington is home to two of the state's best beaches for families with kids. Just north of town, you'll find Ludington State Park Beach. Besides good sand and beautiful views, it offers a snack shop and bathrooms right on the beach. Older kids can go tubing, canoeing or kayaking on the Pere Marquette River, which flows into Lake Michigan. Ludington is also home to City Park Beach on Lake Michigan. When they're done swimming there, your kids will love the nearby playground, skate park and mini golf. The area is also home to family-friendly inland beaches on Pere Marquette, Hamlin and Lincoln Lakes.

Silver Beach

Located in St. Joseph, Silver Beach is kept clean, the sand is as close to perfect as you can get and there are plenty of play areas for kids. Pavilions are available for rent if you're getting together with a larger group. For something truly memorable, consider taking the kids for an educational Lake Michigan tour aboard the Friends Good Will, a replica of a tall ship which was used by both the British and American navies on Lake Michigan during the War of 1812.

Caseville Beach

Michigan's east coast is not as well known for its beaches as the west coast. Don't let that discourage you if you're on the east side of the state. There are plenty of nice beaches on Lake Huron. One of the best for families is found in Caseville, near the tip of the thumb in Michigan. There are actually several nice beaches in the Caseville area, but the best for families with kids is Phillip Park, which includes playground areas, bathroom facilities, a picnic area and grassy play areas. The beach is within walking distance of town, where you can find any beach amenities you need at reasonable prices.

Agate Beach

For something a little different, consider taking the kids to Agate Beach on Lake Superior. You'll find it near Grand Marais in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. While the sand is rockier than other Michigan beaches, kids will enjoy hunting for the pretty rocks and stones adorning the beach, particularly the stunning agates for which the beach is named. Lake Superior's water is considerably colder than the other Great Lakes, but the swimming is still good in the later summer months.
