Medical Schools for Chiropractors

by Rudy Miller, studioD

Chiropractors manipulate patients' backs and necks to relieve pain. Most doctors of chiropractic medicine complete three years of undergraduate work followed by a four-year doctoral program. The Council on Chiropractic Education has accredited only 19 chiropractic medical schools in the United States, located in all parts of the country.

D'Youville College in Buffalo, New York, is the first U.S. chiropractic program set in a liberal arts college. The school offers a seven-year undergraduate to doctorate program and a 3 1/2-year professional program for those who already have an undergraduate degree. The curriculum includes an entrepreneurship course to help students set up a private practice. New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, New York, has a 15-trimester program students complete in three years and four months. The curriculum includes anatomy, biochemistry and microbiology.

Cleveland Chiropractic College in Overland Park, Kansas, promotes a curriculum focusing on spinal function, its relationship to the nervous system and good health. The school offers a medical degree in a four-year, 12-trimester program or an accelerated 10-trimester program. The Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Missouri, offers two masters programs and online course options. The school’s postdoctoral program offers specialized education in sub-disciplines such as chiropractic neurology and nutrition.

Life University in Marietta, Georgia, teaches the educational philosophy of “vitalism,” that all organisms are self-maintaining and self-healing, and that doctors of chiropractic should employ this philosophy. The program covers anatomy, physiology, human chemistry and how to run a successful medical business. The school also offers a master’s degree in chiropractic sport science. Parker University in Dallas, Texas, offers a four-year 10-trimester program. Most students have an undergraduate degree before they enter Parker's program.

Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, California, offers five years’ worth of instruction in 3½ years, due to its year-round curriculum. The program emphasizes anatomy in the first year, applied science and the human body in the second year and clinical training in the final year. Most students receive some sort of financial aid. The Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, California, offers community-based internships that put students into doctors’ offices. The school’s 10-trimester program lasts three years and four months.
