An online engineering degree allows you to work in industries that conduct research and development, manufacturing, engineering services firms and the federal government.

Engineering is the application of scientific, social and economic knowledge to design, build and maintain machines, devices, structures, materials, processes and systems. The discipline of engineering encompasses a wide range of specialized fields, each with a specific focus on a particular area of technology and its applications. Areas of engineering focus includes aerospace, agricultural, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer hardware, electrical, environmental, health and safety, industrial, materials, mechanical, nuclear and petroleum engineers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Columbia University

Ranked third by "U.S. News and World Report" for best online graduate engineering programs in 2013, Columbia University offers a range of online engineering programs. Master of Science programs include biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, general civil engineering, construction engineering and management in civil engineering, Earth and environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Available doctor of engineering science degrees include civil engineering, Earth and environmental engineering, electrical engineering, materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering. You can also earn professional degrees with 30 credits of graduate level coursework in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering and computer system engineering.

North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University provides 15 online master’s degree programs in engineering and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commision on Colleges. Programs include aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, integrated manufacturing systems engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, nanoengineering and nuclear engineering. North Carolina State University was ranked seventh by "U.S. News and World Report" for best online graduate engineering programs.

Stanford University

Stanford University's online engineering programs bring innovative courses, seminars and webinars online. Programs include master's degrees in electrical engineering, management science and engineering and mechanical engineering. Most students complete the 45-unit program in less than five years with the average part-time student taking three to five years. An online graduate certificate in management science and engineering is also available through Stanford University.

Drexel University

Drexel University is the third largest private engineering college in the United States and is an internationally recognized leader in engineering education. Drexel University offers online engineering degrees with the same rigor as on-campus programs. Available online are master’s degrees in electrical engineering or engineering management. Graduate certificates in engineering management and infrastructure engineering management are also available.

Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited the majority of on-campus programs and a handful of fully-online programs. The Associate of Applied Science occupational safety and health technology program at Trinidata State Junior College is accredited. Information technology from Capella University, occupational safety and health earned at Oakland University, nuclear energy engineering technology from Thomas Edison State College, construction engineering technology provided by University of Southern Mississippi, electrical engineering from Arizona State University and computer information systems, among others, are fully accredited online engineering degrees. A systems engineering Master of Science from the Air Force Institute of Technology is also accredited.
