How to Get an LAUSD Classified Job

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the public school system in Los Angeles County. It serves students in Los Angeles, several adjacent Southern California cities and in some unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County. It comprises 1,235 schools and magnet centers, covers more than 710 square miles and employs nearly 30,000 people in more than 1,000 different types of jobs. LAUSD classified positions include all positions that do not require a teaching certificate, such as food-service workers, bus drivers and secretaries.

Finding and Applying for Jobs

Go to the LAUSD website to review current job openings. Opportunities for support, technical and teaching jobs are listed in its career section and include eligibility requirements, salary ranges, typical duties, benefits and working hours.

Register with the LAUSD by creating a candidate profile. It should take between 30 and 45 minutes to complete your profile, which serves as your electronic resume. You return to the website anytime to edit your profile and check the status of your application.

Apply to the job or jobs you are interested in by logging onto your candidate profile and clicking on an "Apply" button. Part of this application process may include answering questions about your job-related background and skills. The LAUSD reviews your responses to these questions when evaluating your resume.

Interview with the hiring department. Bring along a copy of your resume, dress to impress and be ready to talk at length about your employment history and why you think you’ll succeed with the LAUSD. Part of your interview may include taking a performance test, which measures your ability to perform the duties of the job. Only the top three candidates are invited for interviews, and the one selected will be given a tentative job offer.

Attend a prescreening appointment to review and complete new-employee documents. You must also let the LAUSD take your fingerprints. It will run a background check on you, and if nothing to disqualify you shows up, you will be notified that you’ve officially gotten the job.

  • You can sign up for LAUSD’s job-alert system, which lets you select the types of jobs you’re interested in. When one of these jobs opens up, you will receive an automatic e-mail from the LAUSD letting you know.
