Kid-Friendlly Activities in Niles, Illinois

by Jane Rodda

The town of Niles, Illinois, offers the best of both worlds. It is just 15 miles from downtown Chicago, providing all of the big city entertainment and opportunities. The town itself provides numerous kid-friendly venues in a family-oriented community. From a large selection of parks to several recreational facilities, Niles has it all.

Play Places

Kiddie Kingdom provides a wide array of entertaining games for kids. It has redemption games where the kids can win prizes, racing arcade games, kiddie rides, climbing structures and plenty of pizza and hot dogs to fill their tummies. The Golf Mill is a family-owned and operated shopping mall that provides a play area for the kids. It has climbing toys, ball pits, slides and coin-operated rides for children under 42 inches tall. Jump Zone Party is another indoor option with inflatable toys for jumping, bouncing and climbing. Several of the inflatables are themed, with familiar characters such as Dora the Explorer and Batman.

Bowling and Skating

The Iceland Skate Complex has indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks for recreation and structured play. It provides figure skating lessons, hockey lessons, hockey leagues and open skating times. Season passes are available for families, as well as summer camp programs for both figure skating and hockey. For a kid-friendly bowling option, Brunswick Zone Bowling Center offers 32 lanes with large monitors for scoring, newly renovated lounges and furniture, video games, billiards and a snack bar.

Parks

Niles has 25 different parks to choose from that provide recreational activities for kids. Pioneer Park is one of the largest, featuring a miniature golf course, playgrounds, open grassy areas, batting cages, picnicking areas, baseball diamonds and concession stands. Washington Terrace Park has a floor hockey court, along with basketball courts, picnic shelters and a playground. The Oasis Fun Center has a swimming pool with a slide and plenty of swimming space. It also has a playground nearby with open fields.

Classes

One of the more noticeable landmarks in Niles is the Leaning Tower YMCA. With its smaller replica of the world-famous leaning tower, the Y offers children's classes in drama, cooking, ballet, tap, jazz, music classes for toddlers, guitar lessons and creative arts. Rhythm and Beyond offers a large selection of dance classes for kids. It has a parent-and-me class for toddlers, introducing the basics of dance, creative movement classes for 2 to 3 year olds, pre-ballet for 3 to 4 year olds and introduction to hip-hop for 6 to 7 year olds. The more advanced classes include ballet, break dancing, ballroom, jazz and hip-hop.
