Bundling up to go outside can be difficult at any age, but for kids, cold weather often poses special challenges. With two little hands comes the need for two little mittens. Keeping track of this cold-weather gear may prove almost impossible without employing a few tricks. Help your kids keep track of mittens and gloves and keep your own sanity in check, too.
Ribbon or Elastic
Insert the end of the ribbon or elastic up through one sleeve of your child’s coat. Thread it up through the sleeve, across the back of the coat, down through the other sleeve and out the end. Pull the ribbon or elastic out of both sleeves so an equal amount protrudes from both sleeves.
Cut off any excess ribbon or elastic so that approximately 4 inches extends from each sleeve.
Match the right mitten or glove with the right sleeve of the coat and the left mitten or glove with the left sleeve of the coat.
Thread the needle with a double length of thread and tie a knot in the end. Stitch the ribbon or elastic from the right sleeve of the coat to the right mitten or glove. Repeat the same process with the ribbon or elastic from the left sleeve of the coat to the left mitten or glove.
Thread the needle with a double length of thread and tie a knot in the end of the thread.
Position a button on the inside cuff of one mitten or glove and stitch the button to the cuff securely (the exact location of the button is unimportant). Repeat the same process with the other button on the inside cuff of the other mitten or glove.
Show your child how to remove his mittens and attach his mittens or gloves to his coat by simply buttoning the button on the cuff to any existing button hole on his coat.
Items you will need
- 3/4-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon (1 yard)
- 1/2-inch-wide elastic (1/2 yard)
- Thread (matching mittens hand-sewing needle)
- 2 buttons (1/2-inch diameter)
- Another option for attaching mittens or gloves to a coat: use colorful shoelaces instead of the ribbon or elastic. Thread a shoelace through the coat sleeves and sew the shoelace to the mittens or gloves.
