From the plethora of child-centered activities in and around the Inner Harbor, to the one-of-a-kind experiences in the city's diverse and eclectic neighborhoods, you have plenty of options to keep your kids entertained. For those on a budget, this seaport city offers a wide range of free, kid-friendly activities throughout the city.
The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore features international artwork from the early ancient Egyptians to modern day art work. The free museum features several programs for children and families, including tours geared specifically towards children, drop-in art classes on the weekends, as well as parent-child art classes. The Baltimore Museum of Art is also free for everyone, holding special family art programs throughout the year, including its regular Free Family Sundays workshops. On Friday evenings, the Maryland Science Center opens its observatory up to the public for free, allowing kids to peek at the stars using their state-of-the-art telescopes.
Take the kids down to the Baltimore Inner Harbor for a variety of free entertainment opportunities. The Urban Pirate adventure boat, "Fearless," welcomes kid pirates on board for free on Wednesday and Friday mornings for Pirate Story Time. In the summer, the HarborPlace Amphitheater, in the heart of the Inner Harbor, features free music and performances throughout the day, including clowns, magicians and kiddie bands. Cruises on the Bay, which provides boat tours around the Inner Harbor, offers free cruises to kids 11 and under on Mondays with the purchase of an adult ticket.
At the Fudgery, kids are sure to love the tantalizing tastes of fudge samples and the harmonic sounds of the fudge makers, famous for their lively singing as they work. The Fudgery also offers free tours so kids can see how fudge is made. You can also visit the Baltimore Visitor's Center to pick up a map for free self-guided walking tours of the city. It also offers maps for free biking tours, such as Jones Fall Trail, which takes you through parks as well as scenic urban areas.
Take advantage of the free parks for your kids to enjoy outdoor play in Baltimore. Pierce's Park at the Inner Harbor is a modern, sustainable art and music-themed park, featuring climb-friendly art sculptures and a musical fence. Also at the harbor, The Walter Sondheim Fountain is a free water play area where kids can splash around 53 water spray features. Federal Hill Park overlooks the Inner Harbor and is the ideal place to set up a picnic, while your kids go rolling down its sloping hills. You should also check out Patterson Park in East Baltimore, which includes a small lake, two playgrounds, a pool and an ice skating rink.
