How to Roast Pears

Items you will need

  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Sugar and spice blend of your choice
  • Baking sheet
  • Lemon juice
  • Pastry brush
  • 1/2 cup water

Roasting pears brings out their natural sweetness, leaving them soft, juicy and flavorful enough to serve as a dessert on their own. Of course, you can add other elements -- such as a scoop of vanilla ice cream -- for added flavor. Alternatively, you can use your roasted pears in more savory dishes; they work well in salads, for example, or with many flavorful cheeses. The basic process of roasting pears is simple, but has plenty of room for creativity. You can incorporate other flavors into the roasting process to give the final product the exact taste you wish.

Step 1

Rinse each pear you wish to roast thoroughly under cool, running water. Place the pears on the cutting board and slice each one in half from top to bottom. Remove the core from each half and discard. Cut the pear halves into smaller pieces or slices if you wish.

Step 2

Sprinkle a baking sheet with a blend of sugar and spices of your choice, if you wish, then arrange the pear halves or slices on a baking sheet with the cut side facing up. Brush the cut side of each piece with lemon juice. Alternatively, you may put the pears on the baking sheet, brush them with lemon juice, then sprinkle them with a blend of sugar and spices.

Step 3

Add 1/2 cup of water to the baking sheet. This is optional; pears roasted this way will remain moister than those you roast without water.

Step 4

Bake the pears in a preheated 425 degree Fahrenheit oven until they are tender enough for your liking. If you did not include water, turn the pear pieces regularly to avoid burning them. If you did include water, baste the pears with the liquid in the pan several times during the baking process. It may take anywhere from 10 minutes for small slices to 40 minutes for large halves for your pears to be fully roasted.
