How to Clean an Electric Self Shaver

Electric shavers give you a fast, convenient way to shave, but over time, your shaver will need cleaning -- even if it's a so-called self-cleaning model. A clogged or dirty electric shaver can harbor bacteria from hair and skin cells, which can lead to infection. A clean shaver functions better and provides a smoother, closer shave. Clean your electric shaver after every third use or so to remove hair, skin cells and other residue so the device can perform optimally.

Step 1

Turn off and unplug the razor. Remove the cutter head from the device. Most cutter heads lift off the frame. Refer to your owner’s manual for specific instructions on removing the cutter head.

Step 2

Brush loose hairs off of the razor head with a small paintbrush or razor brush. Run the brush over the frame of the razor, the cutter and where the head attaches to remove loose debris from these areas.

Step 3

Disassemble any remaining parts of the electric razor that are removable. Some shavers will have combs and cutters that can be removed, while others will be permanently attached to the frame. (See References 1, 2 and 3)

Step 4

Fill a sink with hot water. Add a few drops of liquid soap and mix well.

Step 5

Swish around all removable parts of the shaver, including the cutter head, in the soapy water. Use a rag to scrub away any built-up grime.

Step 6

Rinse the parts under clean water and lay them on a towel to air-dry. Once all parts are completely dry, reassemble the shaver.
