Interviewing for a job can be a stressful experience. To give yourself the best chance at success, it is critical to make a good first impression. Your appearance is one of the first things a recruiter notices about you during a job interview. Your appearance speaks to who you are as a person and supports your image. As a result, understanding some good examples of appearances for a job interview can help you make the best possible impression and increase your chances of landing the job.
Some organizations implement a formal dress code. As a result, you should wear formal business attire to your interview. Even if the organization’s dress standards are casual, wearing a suit to the interview suggest that you take the process seriously. Formal wear for men may include wearing a neutral suit, such as charcoal, gray or navy. A white or light blue long-sleeved shirt is deemed appropriate. Men’s formal attire should include black or brown conservative shoes and socks and a tie that coordinates with the color of your suit. Formal wear for women may include wearing a classic skirt suit or pantsuit. Women’s skirts should cover the thigh. For women, a tailored blouse or sweater that coordinates with the suit and closed-toe dress shoes with modest heels are appropriate.
In an effort to make employees more comfortable, many companies implemented a business casual dress code policy. An example of business casual attire for men may include wearing a sports suit, casual bottom-down shirt, black or brown Oxfords or loafers and traditional dress slacks. In most cases, men are not required to wear a tie. Business casual attire for women may include wearing a pantsuit and blouse or a knee-length skirt with a cardigan. Although business casual attire is less formal than business attire, women should avoid showing cleavage.
Grooming and Accessories
Although your clothing is important, you should make sure that you are well-groomed. For example, your hair should be neat, clean and professional. Polishing your shoes and cleaning your fingernails are also important. Pay attention to the details of your attire. For example, there should be no missing buttons from your clothes. Remove all external tags and lint from your clothing. Your clothes should be clean, fit properly and pressed. If you desire to wear a fragrance, use it sparingly. Heavy cologne or perfume can cause a distraction during the interview. You should keep your jewelry to a minimum and avoid wearing anything flashy.
What Not to Wear
During the interview process, some attire and accessories may leave a negative impression. For example, you should avoid wearing clothing with extravagant patterns or bright colors. Jeans, shorts, leggings, sweatpants, T-shirts and athletic shoes are unacceptable attire for a job interview. Miniskirts, sandals and open-toe shoes are typically not good examples of appearance for job interviews.
